"The Help" is a remarkable novel. Kathryn Stockett gave us unforgettable, vibrant, and believable characters. Each woman has her own voice, personality and story. Together they present a compelling picture of Jackson, MS during the tumultuous early 1960s. The novel gives us unique insights into race relations in the South but more importantly into the complex personal relationships of Black domestics and their employers. This is a great novel and I highly recommend it.

I think the reason I like this book so much is because I read it at a particular time and place when it really rang true for me. We all have those phases where the idea of striking out on your own and just heading out with no particular destination is such a romantic ideal, and that is when I read this book.

Perhaps I should not read books on faith. Lamott spends the first part of the book explaining how bad she was - drugs, alcohol, affairs etc. She overdid the details and I thought this is a St. Paul or St. Augustine conversion moment. - "bad, bad, bad, ... Jesus.... good, good" and the good is supposed to be so much better because of the evil. So when Jesus slipped into her life...I was not surprised. But Lamott does tell funny stories. I love the literary references and her metaphors. She admits being self absorbed. Too true! However, her humility and humanity come through and there are many learning/touching moments. We had a great book group discussion because of this book. Would I ever read a Lamott book again? Probably not. I am not sorry I read this one even if it became tedious at the end.

An amazing genre-bending novel about the dangers created by propping up a false utopia. Set in the closing days of Stalin's reign in Russia, the book captures the pitfalls of blind faith in a government that terrorizes its people in the name of social progress while covering up crime as political dissidence.
one of the funniest people alive today, without question.
The book reminds me of how to saves lives. Thumbs up to all doctors and to all health care providers including me! KUDOS!!!!. :D
