I saw the movies before starting the books and I finally "got it" - why so many people like are invested in this series - once I switched to the books.

This review does not contain any spoilers for this book. It will, however, have spoilers for the first (in case you skipped the first book). There were lots of 'oh's and 'really?" 's in this book. What I like in this book, and in Evernight, really, is that there are a lot of twists and things you never expected to happen. Something major always happens in every book, so don't be discouraged even though you're still 50 pages before the end... Because within those 50 pages, something major just happens. It's an Evernight fact. So let's get back to the story line everyone knows so well: Bianca and Lucas gets separated by the end of the first book after Bianca ran away from Evernight Academy. Bianca and Lucas would somehow meet up in the second book, through some way. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if Bianca really was human and she did save Lucas, like the story they invented. Then it would've been cool that she would've joined Black Cross and everything- But she's not human. Bianca is a vampire and she loves Lucas.... However, Black Cross and Vampires just don't mix. Black Cross kill vampires, Vampires fear Black Cross hunters. That, my friend, is Evernight's mighty complication. Pretty much the whole book revolves around this complication: vampires and Black Cross hunters and all that. All the surprising bits come at the end, and all the good quotes (for me at least) are at the end part. I feel that Bianca has grown up in this book, and in so many ways. I liked this book mainly because of its unpredictability and its ability to twist the plot right til the very end. Its cliffhanger ending was definitely a good way to end the book. Although there is a certain part I dislike about it, at least it was a refreshing change from reading the House of Night series, what with Zoey liking too many guys. So while you are reading this and haven't read the second book, you are probably wondering if Bianca and Lucas will meet up or how, or "what are these 'twists' you talk about?" Just read to find out. You will, eventually.

Really liked it when I read it growing up. Have to read it again to comment though.

Finally, Swedish metal gets its props! Norway usually gets all the credit for metal, while Sweden is dismissed as full of crappy Gothenburg-sound bands like In Flames. But what has Norwegian metal really done since Darkthrone, Mayhem, et al? And how can anyone write off a scene that produced bands like Bathory, Candlemass, Anti Cimex, Entombed, Nihilist, At the Gates, Unleashed, Disfear...? His own translation from the original Swedish text, Ekeroth's insider perspective is both informative and hilarious, and paints a grim and frosty picture of the Swedish punk/metal scene in the 80s, and of teenage life in the middle of nowhere.

Another book about books. This one gives a very short synopsis of what the authors believe to have been the most influential books written from 1895 to 1995. Some of them are quite scary - 'Mein Kampf' by Adolf Hitler, Sigmund Freud's 'The Interpretation of Dreams', 'Why I am Not a Chtistian' by Bertrand Russell, John Maynard Keynes' 'The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money' and 'My Fight for Birth Control' by Margaret Sanger. I enjoyed reading this book, but the world-view critique was rather in the opposite direction than mine would be......
A fascinating study of how ancient teachings about what makes us happy are confirmed through modern psychology. His conclusions have repercussions. Easily digestible and compelling.
a good post-college read. read it before my senior year and recently read it again. not as thought provoking as "blue like jazz", but still a great read. the author's note at the beginning of the book are pages i keep going back to--miller says some great stuff.
I love Shannon Hale! This was a quick read and very good. I read it in a few hours! (again I couldn't put it down).

This was more fun than I expected. I enjoyed the author asides, and laughed quite a bit. It reminded me a bit of "Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians," though as that was written later, perhaps it owes more to this. Many reviews also comment on its similarity to Lemony Snickett's books, but I haven't read them yet. I loved all the book references, and the quirky characters, and the house of books. I think it would be fun for a young reader too.
A Classic.
