Completely sucked me right in, the second half of the story. It's a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, beginning when the Miller dies and leaves his dilapidated and possibly cursed mill to his daughter, Charlotte, and her younger sister Rosie. The first part of the book I got a little lost in the details of the workings of a mill and the random characters thrown in, but once past that, there was no putting the book down.

Loved this book! This is the second in a trilogy. The third was scheduled to come out in March but they had to postpone it until May... Darnit! I can't wait to read the third!

Can't believe I never read these before. Actually I read a couple of the stories that were included in first book ("The dying earth") but all four books here are extremely good. The first is really a collection of short stories that were edited into a continuous novel, although relatively few characters appear in more than one "chapter". The first book is more straightforward sword & sorcery/science fantasy type stuff, with many bizarre settings and characters. The next two books, "The eyes of the overworld" and "Cugel's saga", follow Cugel the Clever's picaresque adventures across several countries in the dying earth. These are very, very funny and witty. Cugel is a rogue and real bastard. The last book, "Rhialto the Marvellous," is another picaresque, following the adventures of a magician, who is, if anything, even more of a bastard than Cugel. Vance has a way of using words that has to be experienced. His humor is very dry, and his characters have been described as "desperately extravagant" which is about right. The setting is the earth, millions of years in the future, where many cycles of civilization have fallen and risen. The sun is now sputtering out, a dim red dwarf. Magic and science are indistinguishable, and the world is haunted by many dangerous monsters left over from the terrible experiments of past "magicians." People are largely resigned to the looming end of the world, but rogues like Cugel and Rhialto still scheme...
So unfortunately, a major scene in this book was spoiled for me, so I don't feel I can give a totally genuine review because my attitude toward the book changed after I knew what was coming. LAME! But this book was pretty exciting and had some crazy stuff happen in it! And another cliff-hanger ending...

I just heard about this book. I thought I would read it since it is written by my cousin's husband.

Not an avid Stephen King follower but picked this up for something to get me through. I like how he created situations in which we might all find ourselves. What would WE do?
I enjoyed reading this book. I liked it much better than "Storm Front".
Amazing book. So much feeling in it. A must read. But have the tissues at hand.
Brilliant.
