I loved reading about the places I've been living or visiting in the past few years - Berkeley, Marin County, the Sierra Nevadas. Kerouac is in good spirits here, cavorting with fellow bums, drinking wine, and finding enlightenment on mountain tops. There are some real revelations about being at peace, and treating everyone with compassion.

I finished this last night. I love the way that Oates pulls you in and describes the heartbreaking ordinariness of people. While not life changing, it makes you think twice about the people you see on the streets, judge on a daily basis and hold biases against for no real reason.

This book gets the fourth star because I stayed up 'til 4 a.m. when I first read it at age 16. I could not stop reading it. That doesn't necessarily mean it was good, but it must mean I liked it an awful lot. I think I read like 400 pages that night, and I'm not what you'd call a fast reader. That said, I'm also not eager to revisit this one at age Now, as I'm positive it wouldn't be the same.
