Couldn't believe I would be interested in a story involving a hunt and escape from vampires. Going on simulataneously in 3 time periods the characters and action was grabbing. I was on vacation so had the time but truly hung on every one of the 600 pages.

Loved this. Both the main and secondary characters were well portrayed. Especially the Kid. And even though Bear's way of thinking and his internal monologues were frustrating at times I really enjoyed reading this book and liked the author's writting style.

the class distinctions he described were really clearly thought out. started to see everyone i knew through that lens. but after a few chapters, it felt too much like he was just making fun of people's houses and clothing, and like he enjoyed doing that.

This was an interesting interpretation of ancient cultures based on archeological evidence. Some of it was a bit dogmatic but she's right about the world needed a change from the violence and aggression of male dominance.

Absolutely amazing. I wish I could attend Calvin forever just so I can always have the option of walking over and talking face to face with this extremely talented author, who also happens to be one of my profs. I only gave the book 4 stars because of the ending--really, Professor Schmidt? Really?

Another of my favorite genre, obsessively niche nonfiction. It tells the story of contemporary luthier (violin maker) Sam Zygmuntowicz in an industry that so venerates the old. Marchese (a musician himself -- trumpetist) paints a vibrant picture of a maker of new violins -- one of the first to make a modern violin rivalling the old Italians. The book follows Zygmuntowicz during the intensely personal and meticulous process of designing and building a violin commissioned by a noted violinist, while at the same time exploring the mystique of old violins. Bonus: Zygmuntowicz's studio is apparently just down the street from my current apartment! It's completely nondescript.
