I enjoyed this read from beginning to end. I inhaled this book. There were a couple aspects that I thought could have been executed more strongly, but the aspects that I did enjoy and love outweighed the 'alright' parts :) Click to check out my video review!

I loved this book. I bought the book in London back in the day before Amazon. I was so bummed when I couldn't find anymore of her books in American bookstores. Fiona Walker was my first introduction to British chick lit.

At first this book was a hoot, but the premise began to wear thin. Imagine Nancy Drew and Ned actually growing old, having flings with other members of the girl and boy detective series (Nancy has a thing for Frank Hardy--Cherry Ames is a flirt). Personally, I got more enjoyment out of M.T. Anderson's send-ups of the genre (Whales on Stilts and The Case of the Linoleum Lederhosen)

It's one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's a novel but have some true events. A touching story.

I love this series. I am pretty sure I will read them again and probably buy them for my son when he is a little older.

If the show had not been made, if I had not read a ton of other vampire books, THE AWAKENING might have been OK. Since the show was made and since I have read a ton of YA PNR with vampires as the central figure… I am amazed that I finished it. First: This book pales in comparison to the show. So from here on out I am not even going to bother with a comparison. Second: I hate Elena! Flighty, believing herself entitled, and very insensitive to the needs and feelings of those around her (poor Matt!) I really did not like how she seemed to feel herself entitled (i.e. once she had set her sights on Steffan, nothing mattered: Not her boyfriend. Not her friends.) I suppose I should admire her go get him attitude. Sadly, I just could not! The only thing that I agreed with was her assessment of Katherine. Which leads me to the boys, Steffan and Damon. Nothing new to them. Hot, brooding… bla bla bla. I suppose I am being a tad harsh especially considering that these books were first published in 1991(?) So I suppose they’re trailblazers, the first of their kind at the time… I would not know. But I am stubborn because I’m reading the rest. I intend to answer in the affirmative (and with a straight face) that, yes, I did read the books she got me.

If I had all the time and money in the world, this book would be my travel companion.
An epistolary novel in which the narrator writes to his adult daughter (whom he hasn't seen in years) about the events of his life. Much of the narrative is set during WWII and described the anti-German fervor in the small town.

Overall, a great story. I can't really relate to Chris's life, but I know quite a few people who are similar to him. The author tells us that many people look down on Chris for how he distanced himself from his family, how he died, and how he attempted something many see as pointless. Although I can see both sides of the story, it is always easy for others to judge and compare others to themsleves. I may not have chose the same path, but I know everyone is so different, Chris must have felt he had reasons for each and every move he made. I feel sorry for him and his family. The author adds a bit of his own personal experiences into the book as well as other people's similar experiences. I can't really decide if I liked that or not. In a way it just gives you a comparison and is there to help the reader see what Chris MAY have been thinking/feeling at the time. I did not like leaving Chris's story to hear about these other lives though. I saw the movie before reading this book. The book informs you from the very begining that the tale ended in tragedy. The movie, however, does not. I watched the whole movie never knowign that Chris would die. I actually think that fact made me more endeared to the story because I expected him to live, and was brought to tears by the outcome, more moved then I would have been otherwise. "It is easy, when you are young, to believe that what you desire is no less than what you deserve, to assume that if you want something badly enough, it is your God-given right to have it."
