In the past few weeks I have read Sylvester and Arabella and enjoyed both novels extremely. They are both romance stories set in the regency era - the same era that Jane Austen's novels take place in. Both novels were a light hearted romance without the gratuituos sex that is found in so many romance novels of the past thirty years or so. They were a nice, relaxing read. They reminded me of a Jane Austen type romance, but the language style was more twentieth century. If you love Jane Austen or historical fiction in general and are looking for a good book - I highly recommend Sylvester and Arabella.

If you like "pure" capitalism then you'll like Ayn Rand. This book is essentially a description of Rand's capitalistic philosophy and moral framework over a collection of essays and is worth the read even if you don't agree with her views. This book is a little repetitious which leads me to believe that if you've read Rand's other non-fiction then this is probably more of the same.

I know, it's a classic, but none of us liked it. The book has no plot, it just random weird things that happen to Alice while she's dreaming that aren't even funny. Alice is whiny and rude. My kids have now taken to running around after each other shouting "off with your head" (most annoying) and this book is going back to the thrift store.

A dense read with some interesting characters, but I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone.

The Peach Keeper was a great summer read - a tiny bit predictable, populated with likable characters, enough tension to make the romances interesting and well-written but easy to read. The Peach Keeper is set in Walls of Water, a small North Carolina town. The cast of characters are young thirtysomethings who are trying to figure out who they are now, who they were in high school and how to reconcile the two. I liked all four of the main characters - Paxton, Colin, Sebastian and Willa - and I could relate to the push/pull of their shared history, their families and their hometown. Allen crafted characters that interacted with each other in believable ways, but were also fully formed individuals apart from their romantic relationships and friendships. This isn't always easy to create in a novel. One character can end up being defined by who s/he is when with another character. Allen didn't fall into this trap with The Peach Keeper. I also enjoyed spending time in Walls of Water, particularly in Willa's sporting goods store. It sounded like a place where I might want to vacation (although I must confess I would not want to live there). I loved the way Allen described places in the town not only by how they looked, but by smell. Paxton's desire for a home smelling of doughnuts and fresh cut grass was evocative, as were other descriptions of coffee aromas, lemon scents and others. I read this book via Nook and I'm not sure whether it was the format or simply my desire to lose myself in a book momentarily, but I read it incredibly quickly. I have found reading books on an electronic reader tends to result in me reading the book faster. Given that I've only read two books this way thus far, the data is inconclusive as to whether its format, my interest level or the readability of the book. Should YOU read The Peach Keeper? If you're in the mood for a light, engaging summer read or a novel that will whisk you away on a mental vacation when you're stuck at home in a rut or just a bit of escapist fiction, then yes, you should read it. Perhaps, like me, you'll find it to be a quick read that leaves you glad for the break from everyday life.
This book reads so much like The Hunger Games with new characters and premises. I loved it as much as the Hunger Games, and felt similar emotions as I read it. The protagonist is a teenage girl, and there is a teen love story woven into the plot. Definitely worth reading.
