Ultimately, the book appeals to the emotions rather than the intellect (but perhaps rightfully so). It is not a serious anthropological study by any means. Certain facts offered in the text could be disputed, her frequent analogies range from unneccesary to utterly ridiculous, and her attempts at providing evolutionary explanations for the long-enduring behaviors exhibited by Ju/wasi--and the rest of humanity--are amateur at best. Rather, its value lies in in the unique insight it provides as a personal account describing Elizabeth's firsthand experiences as an outsider among the Ju/wasi, and, for whatever it's worth, the nostalgic recollection and reflection offered by a person who has witnessed great change in his or her lifetime. And perhaps most noteworthy, the people known as the Ju/wasi are transformed from some exotic culture in a farwaway, obscure land to individuals that people from a vastly different way of life can relate to, sympathize with, and mourn for.

I'm not a non-fiction girl, but this was pretty good once I got moving.

A very simple pirate love story. Have read some scenes over and over again
This was the first Maguire book I read after Wicked. It's amazing how Maguire could take the story of my favorite movie and make it just as amazing told from another point of view in one book, then take my favorite fairytale character and totally ruin the story in another. This book had such potential - it could have made for a very interesting story, but the characters lacked any depth, and I could not summon a bit of empathy for them. The "twist" at the end was contrived and could be spotted from a mile away.
This was FULL of good stuff - I really came away learning much about the universe and am now able to impress friends! No really, it was good. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is I think it was almost too much. I wish it could have been broken up into two books - it's definitely chock full of info - made me miss being in a classroom.
Quality Moore that is definitely amusing in points, if not as gut-splittingly funny as his more recent works. Nice cameos from standard Moore characters; Inspector Alphonse Rivera drops in, as does Minty Fresh. I knew I was saving this one for last for a reason, and it's because it just doesn't stack up to the genius of Lamb or the morbid hijinks of A Dirty job
This book first caught my attention because it takes place in Wyoming. The author felt drawn to the land when passing through on a cross country trip. I experienced the same attraction but unlike the author I was not brave enough to move there and live with the cold, cold winters. This is not a Disney story. Shreve Stockton writes about the how hard it can be to bring a wild animal into a domestic setting. What I really liked about the book is that along with the story of Charlie you get a little bit of romance, a little bit of philosophy, a little bit of self awareness (the authors and my own). The photos of Charlie are worth looking at on their own.

I found myself constantly comparing this to Twilight, after I got halfway through I told myself to stop that. Then I started to enjoy the book for what it was.
I liked this story better than "Wicked". It has similar elements of political intrigue and activism to "Wicked" but it is painted with a more strident brush. I am a great an of Maguire and enjoy while being grossed out by his realistic (read graphic) descriptions of nearly every aspect of life. "Son of a Witch" is Liir's story and throughout "Wicked" you never really find out if Liir really is Elphaba's son. In SOW, the same lack of explanation of Liir's origins continues. It is only the very last line of the story that provides the answer in a roundabout way. Liir's journey is filled with so many of the darkest acts of man -- infanticide, police brutality, descriptions of prison/prison life, murder, rape, slavery, environmental destruction...I'm probably leaving some out...but despite all this a thread of hopefulness carries through the story. Liir, the unloved, unclaimed boy, learns about love in it's many forms. The good and the bad about the ending is that it leaves room for a third novel.
Laurie is my favorite character in American literature. If not all literature.
