Wow. How do I begin to collect my thoughts? I love the character development: Billie's dreamlike childhood, Grandpa's flare, the foolish sisters' innocence, Old Dan and Little Ann's excitement and determination; I love them all like they had been my dear friends this past month. The sweet little tone in which Billie shares them with me will be missed. Rawls is a fabulous writer. He describes setting so well you really sense the time and see the place. I longed for the Ozarks after each chapter. I thought maybe if I closed my eyes tight enough I could reach out and touch the counter in Grandpa's store or walk the trail of a Coon. But I don't think I'll ever read this book again. Not as a middle school teacher, not as a mother. I don't want to put any children through that pain, and especially not myself. Strange thing is, I remember LOVING this book when my dad read it to us as our bedtime story. I just think young kids can't grasp it, and as an adult I'd hate to be the one who has to help them try. Ruben Pritchard's role is very disturbing. Particularly how little it actually affects Billie. Ugh, I still shutter over it. The details describing Old Dan and Little Ann's fight at the end make my stomach turn. If anything, it made me feel even better about all the times my parents and Uncle just took a suffering animal out in the farm field and shot it. Overall I have really mixed feelings about this book. I love so many aspects of it. But I really don't see myself ever wanting to share the reading experience with another human being. I'm so glad Reid is just 6 months old and didn't understand any of it. But I'm also glad I was able to revisit this childhood classic. I'll never be able to get rid of the first edition copy my dad read to me and my 2 older brothers, but I'll never thumb through it again. No book has ever really had that impression on me.
