I keep thinking I'm vampired out when it comes to fiction (and between Mormon sparkling vampires and moronic Sookie-loving vampires, who isn't?) And yet, once or twice a year I still pick up a vampire novel. Sometimes it's a well-intentioned dud like Fangland: A Novel but happily, sometimes it's a book like The Radleys. The Radleys are a family of vampires in contemporary suburban Yorkshire, England. They follow an abstinent lifestyle using a self-help tome called The Abstainer's Handbook as a guide. One of the best parts of the book is how much the Handbook sounds like a real, dreary self-help book ("Tips to prevent overwhelming blood thirst. #5: Watch golf.") Being an abstainer in this universe is a viable but dismal existence. The Radleys and their two teenage children (who don't even know at the beginning of the book that they are vampires) are subject to migraines, rashes, physical weakness, and bone pain and that's just for starters. Their somewhat normal but miserable existences are collectively shattered when their daughter Clara is attacked and nearly raped at a party, discovers she has fangs and that her attacker is unexpectedly pretty tasty. In a panic, Peter Radley calls his estranged brother, a notorious and very much practicing vampire for help. This sets in a motion a cascading series of misfortunes, unearthed family secrets and generally bad ideas. For recreational literature, this was perfect. The story was fun, original and surprisingly well-written. The book was very visual so I wasn't surprised to learn the movie rights have already been optioned by Alfonso Cuaron.

Though it took an embrassingly long time, I finally did sit down with this book and, to my surprise, read it in four sittings. Though I had been assured there were no "little green men" I was sure the science and math would be too much for me. I'm so glad I was wrong. This was, indeed, an excellent read. Uncharacteristically of me, I was very absorbed in the religion vs. science aspect to the book -- definitely a sign of a talented writer as I'm usually loathe to be involved in anything that even hints of a relgious discussion. Somehow, also, Sagan manages to make complex concepts easily understood. A very satisfying read that left me with a great deal to think about.

I'm not politically savvy and thought this book gave some good explanations of some of the issues.

I can no longer rate Simenon because I enjoy him too much. Given that, this might be a just-below-a-4, distinctly higher than a 3. Maigret surprised me several times in this novel, and I like him (and Madame Maigret) better than ever.

It was a book club selection and I was excited to dive in. As a fan of mystery series, I thought I'd fall in love with this book. The book happens to be set in my neck of the woods which made it personally interesting for me. The story and mystery were ok, but I just didn't connect to the characters. I'm also not a coffee drinker so the endless descriptions of beans, grinds and brewing was not my cup of tea. (Pun totally intended!)

This was a 2009 Michael L. Printz honor book. Pratchett is probably best known for his offbeat, dry and sometimes twisted humor, especially in his Discworld books. This still has the ironic, droll wit, but Nation is a lot more serious and reflective compared to the other books I've read. After a devastating tsunami destroys all that they have ever known, Mau, an island boy, and Daphne, an aristocratic English girl, together with a small band of refugees, set about rebuilding their community and all the things that are important in their lives. Both children -- especially Mau -- struggle with thier identities and the beliefs and mores they grew up with as they build a new world. A neat story with interesting and balanced observations, with no stone -- whether it be religion, racial bias or gender roles -- left unturned. I'd recommend this for 13 and up. The ending was probably "neater" than what would have happened in real life, but given the scope of the tragedy elsewhere our protagonists have to go through, it was appropriate.

Not perfect but quite good. The action was intense, and the book hooked me right in. I am sad I have to wait until August to read the next one. HarperCollins, please send me an ARC!! :)

I liked this book - nice story, good writing, decent amount of history - but I didn't love it. As historical fiction goes I prefer a lot more history and a lot more complexity. This seems more like your basic love story set in two different times in India, rather than a piece of historical fiction about a time period in India. I wish the author had stuck with the 1947 storyline, the late 1800's storyline seemed a bit forced and less compelling than the former and the connection between the two stories felt kind of strained. In retrospect this reads a bit like two novels that got mashed into one - an action that didn't do either story a lot of good. To her credit, however, Ms. Newmark does know how to tell a story, even when it's not exactly what I thought it should be.
