Although The Night of The Iguana deals with similar issues of loneliness and being trapped, it adds a thread of sexuality into the mix. The cast is no longer a tightly knit dysfunctional family but a cast of lonely people in various stages of life, full of unhappiness and frustration. The action takes place in a rundown 1940s resort in Puerto Barrio, Mexico. Widowed hotel owner Maxine welcomes to the hotel former Reverend Shannon, who is now leading a tour group of women. Added to the mix is the elderly spinster Hannah Jelkes and her centenarian grandfather, the “oldest living poet” who has also unfortunately lost his hearing. The underlying symbolism in the play is that of the iguana that the Mexican hotel workers find and trap under the porch. Like the trapped iguana, Reverend Shannon, Hannah, and Maxine are trapped in their lives. As Reverend Shannon and Hannah talk, the two very different people come to a little bit of understanding with each other. I fully grant that there is a lot in this play that I missed on my first and only read. Because I read it shortly after rereading The Glass Menagerie, I was a bit disappointed. I don’t know why; I guess I prefer dysfunctional family. While the setting was intriguing and the ending just wonderful for the play that it was, there was something unsatisfying about the play as a whole for me. I wanted more depth or symbolism or something. It seemed to lack subtly in the dialogue and the symbolism that had so delighted me in The Glass Menagerie
Best book in the series so far. Rose keeps growing, learning and becoming an adult. Her relationship with Lissa is no longer stagnant. In fact, everything gets shaken up in this book. What does it mean to grow up? What does it mean to love? To sacrifice? To be a leader? I didn't think Vampire Academy was going to seriously address those issues when I finished the first book, but now I see I was wrong. Basically.....Buffy. I hate that I keep saying that, because I don't want to make it sound like Mead isn't doing great work of her own. She is. It's just....the awesome things about Buffy are also awesome things about VA.

Only 3 because of the archaeology and Abe. The main chracters were boring. The suspects and possible motives were too common. The story took predictable turns. I'm glad the love scenes weren't too uncomfortable and the interactions were very normal - a good thing.

Foer's writing always catches me in the most unexpected ways. I fell in love with his somewhat quirky writing style when I read EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE and this book didn't disappoint. There were so many times where I found myself hysterically laughing over the character's adventures, and others where I was heartbroken over their decisions and the stories of their pasts. A beautiful book.

Literacy skills: Narrative skills-the story has wonderful descriptive pictures. There is a cute story to the book, but the illustrations would definitely lend themselves to having a child make up their own story for the book.

This was one of my very first books that I read in Book Divas. It was recommended as a must read for any woman. I had a really hard time getting into it...the Divas would like to me to re-read it again.

I know....I usually despise Nicholas Sparks, so cliche and corny, and this one isn't much different but it was laying around last night when I was bored and so now I've read about half of it and of course I have to finish it!
