Intensely disturbing noir/police procedural based loosely on the still-unsolved 1948 murder of aspiring actress Elizabeth Short (dubbed "The Black Dahlia" by the press). The story centers on two beat cops on the LAPD who wind up on the case. The POV character, former boxer "Bucky" Bleichert, talks his way into a spot on the detective squad investigating the murder, which gradually takes him on a trip into the darkest reaches of the psyche as he becomes progressively obsessed with chasing every conceivable lead, and running into dead-end after dead-end. A harrowing experience, but good stuff nonetheless.

Karis is a solitary artist tormented by nightmares, and Vander is a funny, sexy, gorgeous man who just happens to be Djinn, or a genie. Their shared experience to unlock the mystery of Karis’ past serves as the foundation for Ms. Gregory’s romantic tale. Ms. Gregory has a talent for placing the reader right there in the middle of a scene. She has a good eye for detail and a great feel for dialogue; Karis’ & Vander’s conversations range from outright hilarity to leg-crossing intensity. Vander is wonderfully created; he has an awesome sense of presence and dimensionality that Karis lacks. Compared to Vander, Karis comes across as insubstantial. This could be intentional, as Karis is unaware of her own origins and abilities. Ms. Gregory gives us hints about Vander’s backstory and they’re like crumbs. I was hopelessly intrigued by these clues. There is a wealth of fertile ideas that reside in Vander’s world and in his background, so if Ms. Gregory chooses to go that route, she will have no shortage of stories that can result from them. For its intended audience, As You Wish delivers. It is a fast, entertaining read, with solid characters and the right mix of intrigue, sex and humor. Best line: “I would have never made it as a cat; I detest seafood.”

Having a chronic illness myself, I'm always interested in how others cope with something that will never go away and will, in fact, get worse (hmm, sounds like I'm an "incurable pessimist"). I enjoy Fox's writing because he is clear-eyed, unflinching, very bright and very well-read. The book is both intellectual and inspirational, though I often wondered what his life would be like without his wealth and without his having been so incredibly lucky at love. Still, it's his fame and good fortune that enable him to share his story with us and give the rest of us a taste of his optimism.
