Another excellent action packed book from Duane Swiercynski and something just a bit different from your average novel. As I said with The Blonde it's a little bit like being immersed in an action movie. Often with action sequences, chases or fights in prose I get a bit lost but not with this writer. He has such a talent for blasting along and taking you for the ride - yet his writing and characters are believable with asubtle touches too. Like The Blonde there's some nasty, gory violence - as the front cover may lead you to expect. There's an added bonus of stylish comic book illustrations dotted throughout the book. Looking forward to reading more of his work!

For those who loved Because of Winn Dixie...enter Ida B.'s world. Ida B. is a glimpse into the very imaginary and very real world of Ida B. Applewood. Ida B. may one day be having very serious conversations with the apple trees in her orchards (which she has named each one) or playing with the stream as if it were her best friends. Another day, Ida B. is learning about the complexity of relationships with family as her own changes dramatically before her eyes. She learns important life lessons from caring adults, and perhaps she doesn't save the entire world; but she really works hard at saving her own. I listened to this book on audio with Lily Taylor narrating (perfect!).

A fairly quick read about a lower class boy whose life and fortunes become enmeshed with the rich family of the town (and their fortunes and scandals). There's a lot of talk about class, duty, family and morality (when is it okay to do X, Y, Z in the service of A, B, C?) and it certainly made me think about my own upward mobility. But it doesn't add up to much in the end. Maybe that's the purpose, but I was a little disappointed.

This book is written from a his and her's perspective on a tale of survival, loss, love and renewed faith. Any story on survival during the holocaust is a very personal one and yet still a story they share. I love that author showed that along with how the people were still very much in love with the other even when they seemed to move forward with thier lives. They describe people you loose as ghosts that you wear with you like a backpack. The one unique thing I liked about this book was the description of so much color and emotion. Lenka is an artist but Josep describes things with the very same detail and passion. There is no mystery in this book the title says it all but each story is always different.
