I found this more frightening as a teenager than any slasher film at the time. More horrifying from its lack, the absence of knowing than from any gore or brutality that you normally see in film. I continue to reread Lovecraft to this day.

Absolutely amazing book about the hardships of life in China. I found the book so very emotional and had to have the old tissue box next to me. Until you read a book of this calibre, one has no idea of how incredibly cruel life was dealt to women in these countries.

i did enjoy this book and liked hunter as a character. the only down side for me was it didnt focus enough on the main characters and seemed to busy setting up the next book for chase

Kudos to P.D. James, who writes intelligently and intricately plotted mystery novels, for experimenting with an interesting idea and a form so completely different from her usual books. I guess this could also be viewed as a kind of myth retold, depending on your belief system, but I found the whole thing kind of flat and uninvolving, and the characters only sketched in rather than fully drawn, as she is clearly able to do in light of her other novels. Try Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale for a truly scary futuristic vision of a world in which fertility rates have fallen catastrophically.

sigh. I wanted this book to be good. The premise was freaking awesome, but his writing left something to be desired. The characters just didn't ring true at all. Maybe I'm biased because I work with junior high kids every single day, but these kids seemed more like my ten year old daughter than like actual 14 year olds. I finished the book merely out of spite. I didn't want to let it win.
