An amazing account of a family (told from the point of view of the youngest daughter) who survived WWII in Berlin. Very faith promoting--I loved it! A quick read.

strange story, a bit oppressing, of the fall into madness of a poor boy, with the help of his mother and his cousin

Been at least a year since I last read this, but none-the-less I think it is a fascinating book from all perspectives. And that's exactly what it is - a book all about perspective. Consider if you existed in the future, and the world was dying. There was nothing you could do about it - past generations have caused too much damage. But you discover you have the ability to touch and affect the past. Would you trade your existence to change one pivotal moment in history? How do you determine that moment? And how do you determine if the new future you might create will be better? Any History buff should read this. Any Science buff should read this. If you like both, you can't help but love this book.

Elizabeth Bowen is an elegant stylist. It is almost as if each paragraph is a little work of art. The novel begins with two children, Henrietta and Leopold, meeting in a house in Paris. They are both only there in passing, yet over the course of an afternoon they have the shared experience of becoming privy to a dark secret and a cloudy glimpse into the world of the adults who surround them. Exhibiting brilliant shifts in viewpoints, the novel explores sex, identity, and lost innocence in skillful prose. “She thought, young girls like the excess of any quality. Without knowing, they want to suffer, to suffer they must exaggerate; they like to have loud chords struck on them. Loving art better than life, they need men to be actors; only an actor moves them with his telling smile, undomestic, out of touch with the everyday that they dread. They love to enjoy love as a system of doubts and shocks. They are right: Not seeking husbands yet they have no need to see love socially.”

Full of the flavors of folktales (Polish, in this case), and the textures of a life and land on the edge of ruin, this fantasy a sad and moving tale of wonder and hardihood.

Like J.K. Rowling before her, Suzanne Collins has crafted a compellingly entertaining novel, even if the concept is something we've seen before. Written in the tradition of The Running Man by way of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," readers will probably find they're turning the page almost in spite of themselves. That having been said, I still believe that Koushun Takami's Battle Royale is the superior novel.
