The music business is a bitch. No matter who you are – singer, songwriter, band member, roadie, manager, A&R rep, PR flack, club owner or journalist – you have to deal with loads and loads of crap. Even if you get into the biz for the right reasons – you think music can change the world, you want to share your talent, or somebody else’s, with the world – you inevitably get caught up in the inexorable flow down, down, down to the lowest common denominator. Eventually you get sick of living in the musical gutter and decide to strike a blow for originality. In his debut novel, “This Rock Can Talk, “ Ed Ochs a former music editor for Billboard magazine and writer for The Hollywood Reporter, Music Business International, Performance and other publications, sends his hero in search of music that moves him, that sets itself apart, that’s magical. Ochs, who was a co-writer for USA Networks’ early ‘80s cutting edge music show “New Wave Theatre,” is fully aware of the thrill to be had from discovering a new artist, one untainted by greed and free of the predatory grasp of labels, agents, managers and lawyers. In "This Rock Can Talk," the main character, Basil Ghoston, is a popular columnist for SoundProof magazine. Ghoston gets mixed up in some craziness, beginning with a press conference-turned-ambush for The Coolies, a punk band from China. Once Laz Harpocrat, the man who set him up, bails Ghoston out of jail, he enlists the writer to be his “private ear.” Harpocrat, an infamous rock manager, needs help finding “singers and songwriters on a new mission with a new message, with voices and vision you’ve never heard or imagined before.” One song by undiscovered artist Jumbo Little convinces Ghoston to take the job. “He sounds like a cross between, I don’t know, the Ancient Mariner, the Delphic Oracle and Jehovah himself,” Ghoston tells Harpocrat. Ghoston decides to set off from sunny L.A. to cold and wintry Nova Scotia in search of Jumbo Little. Now, that’s dedication. On the eve of his departure, a girl gets delivered to his doorstep in a duffle bag. Ghoston goes on to meet Jumbo Little and witnesses the power of his “deep, distant voice.” Is it enough to help Ghoston discover his passion anew, and gain the courage to change his life? Will he get back to L.A., to the girl in duffle bag? I can’t tell you that. Ain’t that a bitch?
