Brilliant, Brilliant Author! Kind of Braveheart-ish. If you liked that, you may like this. Can good triumph over evil? Or will it always be a matter of the guy with the sword wins? What about when the guys that are supposed to be good are really evil? You may be moved to feel every emotion possible. At times you may find yourself wondering "Is there a God? How could He let these things happen?" While at other times you see things were only possible with Divine Intervention. "The duck swallows the worm, the fox kills the duck, the men shoot the fox, and the devil hunts the men."

This woman can write! Her first chapter is everything the first chapter of a biography should be--intriguing, funny, informative, with turns of phrase that make you sit up and take notice (in a good way). The content in this case is a little more problematical. Because we know so little about Cleopatra, and because all of what we do know is from unreliable sources, pretty much everything in the book is at least somewhat speculative. Also, if feels a little bit padded--a lot of back story about Caesar and Antony, a lot of info about Roman culture and Alexandria. On the other hand, that information was interesting too, at least to me. So if I had rated this after the first chapter, I would have given it 5 stars, but on balance I'm going to knock it down to 4. I'll be interested to read some of her other work where there's more information available. I'm expecting great things!

I stumbled over this - entirely by accident - yesterday morning while going about my regular weekend bookstore crawl. You know how it is, you're heading towards the cash register with your selections and something catches your eye and before you know it, you're shelling out your hard earned dough for a straggler. This book is the horrifying story of a Midwestern girl who goes to New York City to make it big and finds the only job she can find is peep-show stripping. With horror one reads her descent into a state of emotional numbness & detachment - laced with anecdotes that shock - and sometimes amuse. It is a door swung open to reveal a very different world from the one I live in - and for sheer, brutal honesty it just can't be beat. I couldn't put it down! I'll definitely be on the lookout for her next book!

Now that I've read all 3 of the books of the Fuentes I can say that I absolutely love the Fuentes brothers! Luis is the good brother who knows what he wants how to get it. His story starts at the wedding of his older brother, Alex. There he meets Nikki and doesn't see her again until he has to go back to the place where he grew up. Being the good brother, makes Luis understand that he needs to stay away from gangs and get good grades but the more he explores and meets people the, more he gets closer to the dark side of the Fuentes brothers Despite having Luis as the good brother who doesn't get in trouble he still manages to have the appeal that his 2 older brothers did. Luis had grown in the south side of Fairfield but he had never been exposed to the gang. After returning everything seems like it has changed but it doesn't mean that everything has stopped. After Luis finds some things out he feels like he's been betrayed and does some very bad decisions. Nikki was different from Brittany and Kiara. After going through some hard stuff with a boy who just played with her, she is hesitant to trust any boy she meets. I loved how she refused to like any guy but at the same time you could see that she was scared that it would happen. She might have been a hard person to get to but knowing what she went through makes the reader more understanding of her. I loved seeing Alex and Carlos back in this book. You get to see how their lives are going after their story was finished. They are both now good boys who don't want to go back to the way they were but when they see that Luis is in some trouble they are willing to help him. And also, I loved seeing the chemistry teacher back in this one! I'm sad to see the stories of the Fuentes brothers end but I know I enjoyed reading all 3 books. Simone's books have something that makes me not want to stop reading them because I always want to know what happens next. I would definitely recommend this book and the first 2 to anyone!

a must-read for anyone interested in the usefulness (or not) of international law and the human rights movement generally. this woman...i want to head across the river and learn from her. ASAP. after reading this (which any thinking american should probably do...NOW), check out her writings from the past couple of years. SIGH. no matter the progress, some things never change.

The only complaint I have about this book is that the models are MODELS. They're too perfect looking. Most people don't have such sculpted abs, and perfect butts. And since when was drawing or sculpting boring perfect-looking people fun?

An absorbing read, though I definitely found the first part of the book, where the mother and child are shut off from the world in their "room," the strongest. Jack is written best of all--I found most of the other characters wooden. But Donoghue has done an AMAZING job writing from the point of view of a five-year-old child and the suspense on the night of the escape had me covering my eyes (which was annoying since I was reading and not watching a movie haha!) and exclaiming aloud. I just wish the rest of the story had lived up to the promise of the first third of the book.

I found this book in a dusty used book store in Billings, Montana while shopping with my father. I can't remember anymore if he told me about it once I picked it up, but in retrospect it was one of those magical book experiences. I remember scanning the back of my tattered edition and thinking it looked interesting, without any idea who Rilke was, and somehow having never heard the book referenced before. I read it, and was totally enchanted. I only discovered later that most of the world had already had that experience. Once I'd read it I, of course, immediately began hearing it referenced in pop-culture all the time. Somehow, though, I was able to find it all on my own, and read it with no prejudices and no expectations, which I have always thought was really great. It seems so fitting, and like the best possible way to discover it.
