Banks managed to not only produce a page-turner, but a fairly well-written one at that. The story, though conventional, contains some very bold and unconventional choices (particularly at the end), and the society Banks crafts--the Culture--is fascinating.

My rating is not so much "What I thought of the audiobook" as "What I would have thought of the paperback". This was my first audiobook experience, and I just don't understand how anyone can get the same depth of understanding from an audiobook that you can with a hardcopy. Sadly, the Newsflesh novellas don't seem to be available outside of the US in anything other than audio. Grrrr. But I digress.. All the really juicy parts of the backstory to Feed are expanded on here: the evolution of the virus, Shaun & George's parents and their bitterness and how The Rising changed the face of journalism along with the entire world. All of these were alluded to throughout the Newsflesh series, and for me they represent the best parts of Mira Grant's writing: Detailed, credible and interesting backstories behind the world-building. The writing is sharp and direct, as always, and there are moments or real poignancy throughout. I suppose there could have been slightly more witty banter, but otherwise I really can't fault this. If you enjoyed the Newsflesh series, you'll no doubt be wanting to read this novella regardless of anything I say anyway! Now if someone would just send me a hardcopy, I would be really, really happy.....

while written mostly from an almost hearsay point of view, an interesting look into the lives and music of the pioneers of electronic modern music.

I found this to be much better and more readable than the Satanic Verses.

** spoiler alert ** Lehane takes a departure from his regular series and takes us to Shutter Island. This book is full of twists. Lehane called his book, homage to gothic, but also homage to B Movies and Pulp!" Teddy is on Shutter Island to find a missing mental patient. As you travel with him the story becomes more and more twisted, and more focused on Teddy’s case. The story looks at mental health treatments of the past compared to methods used today. You hear the whispering echoes of the past as you find more and more clues. All illusions of control and all surefooted terrain ware away as you get deeper and deeper into the twists of the story. You will haunt your mind into many knotted knots. Your breath becomes stilled as you get caught in the currants off Shutter Island’s shore. The story line however stays constant and will all make sense in the ending conclusion. This book is a true joy. Lehane asks his readers, "What is the fine line between treatment and sterilization of the mind? This books is A definite cluck, cluck, cluck. It will appeal to readers who like to read books with faulty narratives.

The heroine Lucy of Baby on the Billionaire’s Doorstep did some very questionable things IMO, to keep her niece. Her irresponsible sister left her on the doorstep of her father and Lucy wants her and she doesn't have a very good opinion about the father, after all he is a rich playboy. When Dex sees a baby on his doorstep he is shocked and doesn't know if he or his brother Derek is the father, then Lucy shows up on his door saying he's the father. After a rocky start he takes to the baby. My problem was Lucy, she lied to him fine, then how could she in all honesty sleep with him and then expect him to forgive?I never really felt any romance or love between these two and is it turns out there is a sequel with the other brother Derek, who is the actual father.

I never saw the stupid movie, but the first story ties in directly with The Dark Tower series. This was a period of 10 years or more in between Dark Tower installments and I was jonesing like a heroin addict for anything of any semblance of a relation. On its own, not so amazing, but not terrible.
