"The most consistently brilliant science fiction writer in the world."--John BrunnerTHE INSPIRATION FOR BLADERUNNER. . . Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was published in 1968. Grim and foreboding, even today it is a masterpiece ahead of its time.By 2021, the World War had killed millions, driving entire species into extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn't afford one, companies built incredibly realistic simulacrae: horses, birds, cats, sheep. . . They even built humans.Emigrees to Mars received androids so sophisticated it was impossible to tell them from true men or women. Fearful of the havoc these artificial humans could wreak, the government banned them from Earth. But when androids didn't want to be identified, they just blended in. Rick Deckard was an officially sanctioned bounty hunter whose job was to find rogue androids, and to retire them. But cornered, androids tended to fight back, with deadly results."[Dick] sees all the sparkling and terrifying possibilities. . . that other authors shy away from."--Paul Williams Rolling Stone

I don't know where to begin. This took me a while to finish mostly because each page is packed with information, so it makes for some slow reading at times. Basically, the "War on Drugs" was first waged, and continues to be waged, for political reasons, getting presidents and various politicians elected because they vowed to be "hard on drugs". What that usually translated into was massive amounts of government money spent on law enforcement and prisons. And that's about it. Republicans thought that drugs was an individual ailment and those individuals should take responsibility, and Democrats basically thought it was a larger social responsibility, with issues of race and poverty coming into play. The reality is that it's both...which is hard for politicians to get elected on, so they have to choose one or the other. Baum is clearly biased, not towards drug abuse, but the blatant distortion of statistics and facts that was going on during this approximately 30 year period in American history. He doesn't try to hide this bias in any way, so it's not like he's trying to pull a fast one on the reader. His most obvious bias is towards marijuana, which he portrays as being the scapegoat for the "War on Drugs", mostly because all other users of all other hard drugs didn't really add up enough users to wage a war. So pot was painted the ultimate villain by Mr. Nixon, even though a a commission of Nixon's own choosing concluded that marijuana prohibition was not in the national interest and they recommended legalization. He obviously ignored this report. Nixon wanted to wage a war on the marijuana culture more than the drug itself, as he saw it as a threat to American ideals, something set a part from the mainstream. Again, to use it as a political weapon. So there's just too much to summarize, but basically the "War on Drugs", at the time, destroyed civil liberties, including most of the 4th Amendment, revamped the prosecutor's role to focus on drug enforcement, clogged up our judicial system without allocating proper funds, and massively distorted drug statistics to scare the American public into thinking their was a drug epidemic sweeping through the schools. And way way way more stuff that is ridiculous. Also, there is no statistical evidence that connects drug abuse with crime. A rise or decline in one doesn't mean squat for the other. Seriously. "While nobody was saying that drawing hot, psychoactive smoke into the lungs was good for one's health (except perhaps in prescribed medical circumstances), many researchers were saying that a society that tolerates alcohol, tobacco, and bacon-double-cheeseburgers cannot on medical grounds justify jailing people for smoking marijuana." pg. 150

I really really liked it - as good as the kite runner (in my opinion).

My first experience of Lee Child and I have to say I found it a lickety-split cracking good read - perefct to fill a week's worth of bus rides to work without ever looking out of the window. As with almost all thrillers, I found the ending wrapped up just a little too quickly and without sustaining the promise of the first 95% of the book but that's a very minor quibble. A wonderful discovery

This was a really enjoyable young adult novel. A fairy tale really. Good triumphs (of course). Fools become wise or at least wiser. Love prevails. Recommended for any young fantasy lover.

So amazing. The holocaust story told through a taxidermist's shop. Some spots took my breath away.

** spoiler alert ** I had to read this book all our incoming first-year students were required to read it. It was all right. Basically a love story between a Nigerian man and a British woman and how they negotiate their cultural differences. Interesting themes of identity and multiculturalism and all that, but I didn't much care for the characters and was annoyed at all the various poor choices they made along the way. Basically, the book doesn't end on a happy ending because of the mistakes that the characters made throughout their lives. It happens in real life, but I like to read books for escapism and I don't like unhappy endings. But what can you do?

Hot, hot, hot! It took me a bit to try and understand exactly what was going on. But when I did, it all made sense and the story really took off! Romance with plenty of mystery all the way through, this book was hard to put down until everything was solved and figured out! By now, people know my preferred genre in erotica is BDSM. I can't get enough. There was some serious stuff in here, some that wasn't for me (blood play, maiming, the more extreme stuff, although not used to try and entice the reader) and stuff I was happy to read about (consensual role plays). Charlotte is hesitant to get back into the scene after some pretty bad experiences. I like the books where the heroine needs a little healing and a little coxing in a safe environment. Martin is a great pick for her and I highly enjoyed their romps, that seemed to happen all but in a bed. Very sexual, very hot story! Hot enough to make you melt in all the wrong but oh so wrong ways! Definitely not suitable for the under 18 crowd and for those who aren't into more than light bdsm. But if you like a little more to your bdsm, this is definitely a novel worth checking out!

I know Canada is super proud of Carol Shields, but... Yawn! This one wasn't quite as soporific as The Stone Diaries, which I literally couldn't finish because I was snoring too loudly to concentrate, but it was still dull dull dull.
