This was one of my fave Grisham novels. Well written and adventurous. Rachel Lane proved to be an intriguing heorine with values. The fact that she was a missionary made connect with her character as my own parents are missionaries.

I am sure this is a perfectly good book and that I simply wasn't in the mood for it.

Adrian's back! And more angsty than ever (which is exactly how we like him!) In this novel, there is more ups and downs with Pandora, more ups and downs with his parents' relationship, more rejected poetry from the BBC... Adrian befriends Barry Kent and tries a brief stint as a yob, runs away and contemplates suicide. As cringe-inducing and hysterical as the first, Adrian endures as the angstyiest of all the angsty British teens I love so well...

Scottoline read by Rosenblat is always a satisfying listen for me.

Despite giving a comprehensive account of the mid to late 70s DC music scene, this book is (as can be expected) more or less dominated by the plight of Ian Mackaye and Dischord Records. No huge surprise, given the title of the book (Or the photographs of two Mackaye bands on the front and back cover out of four pictures total). Nevertheless, the man is my hero so i loved reading this. Lots of great coverage on other well known and lesser known DC or DC-related bands, including the interesting trajectories of HR from Bad Brains and Brian Baker. Overall, very entertaining and inspiring...that is until Mark Anderson blows it by including 5 pages on the significance of Good Charlotte in the afterword. Oh you think I'm joking?

Sam... mmmm! I love both of these but I think Sam is going to have to take the cake for me- at least for right now. Even though Garrett acts like the eldest at times, Same still has that "I'm the big brother" mentality and hasn't' really acknowledged the fact that it is okay to fall for someone. Boy does he ever fall for Sophie! I love their story and the action packed adventure that it brought us. Sophie is a force to be reckoned with and I loved every second of it!

I started this book with the intention of kicking back and enjoying it. I read about 30 pages and threw the book down in disgust. I was confused by the storyline. The characters seemed over-dramatized and unrealistic. The writing was ripe (stinky ripe, that is) with heavy handed forshadowing and "oooh spooky" factor. Sorry, kids, another one I just couldn't waste my time on.

James Elkins has proven to be the leading diagnostician of art world follies. This work has become a small classic among artists working in the academic side of studio arts and should be required reading for anyone considering a BFA or MFA in visual art. Based upon his experiences as a student and professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Elkins offers a wide array of anecdotes and analyses that will ring all too true to those of us who have waded the wild waters of art school. It is true, art cannot be taught.

Rated 5 stars for being interesting, thought-provoking, challenging accepted ideas and attitudes, and being a personal favorite. Orwell spent a short part of his life as a bum on the streets of Paris and London and as a kitchen slave in a Parisian hotel and a Parisian restaurant. This book is an autobiographical account of that time, of all the people he met, and of the experience of that kind of life. Down and Out is filled with interesting characters and insane situations, all the more interesting and insane because they actually existed. It's also filled with the kinds of insights born out of experiencing life on that level. Some insights that stuck with me: When Orwell absolutely doesn't have a cent (er, pence/sou that is) to his name, he discovers that the worst thing about being flat broke isn't any of those imagined fears he had about poverty back when he was a regular member of the middle class with money in his pockets. The worst thing about poverty is the boredom. Orwell also punctures some myths about the goodness of all those who are in the charity business. There's a kind of degradation of the soul that often goes along with accepting other people's charity, and charity isn't always quite charity when there are certain religious, ideological, and psychological strings attached. But, forget the review - go out and give this one a read!
Finally Agatha has gone legit and opened her own detective agency! I was relieved to hear less pining over her ex James Lacey this time (who I always thought was an ass). Will Agatha ever stop depending on men to prove to herself her self worth? Probably not, but it does make for some juicy mayhem! (Considering she almost always falls for the bad guy!) Oh Aggie, next time just assume the handsome gentleman taking you out to dinner is the villain and call it a day!
