In short, The Prestige is worth the read even if you've come to it after the film. Nicely written novel, reminiscent of turn-of-the-(20th)-century science fiction/fantasy like H.G. Wells. I was pleasantly surprised that Christopher Nolan's film version wasn't a beat-by-beat translation but closer to the kinds of thematic or tonal adaptations that Hitchcock did. I can't say for sure that I "prefer" the film to the book, because that would be an unfair comparison. Were the film more faithful to the source, I think it would be a lesser film but if the film's story were written as a novel, I think it would suffer even more. In a very appropriate way, the film and the book are each other's "prestige."

In Storm Born, Eugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who can banish fey and spirits out of the mortal world; with a wand and a glock. Her most recent case has her learning some disturbing things herself. Like a prophecy that proclaims she will give birth to a son who will lead a fey army to conquer the mortal world. I love that Eugenie is not a prude. Many times our PNR/UF heroines are either inexperienced or easily embarrassed by sex. Eugene is neither and that’s not to say she is slutty. I appreciate a protagonist with a healthy approach to sex. Dorian is great character that brought such some much needed levity to the story (ppl looking at you as an incubator can be a downer). Kiyo was OK. Didn’t love or hate him so we’ll see how the series goes. I didn’t like that the progression of the plot was contingent upon people in Eugenie’s life keep things from her but since this is the first book in the series it a little more forgivable. I like this series enough to continue it and I think it has the potential to become a favorite.

Oh, my. How I looooved this book!!! Was anyone else as duped as I was to believe that Christian was the main guy?? Honestly, I thought he was! And then Tucker. Tucker, Tucker, Tucker. How sweet you are. How funny you are. How PERFECT! This story was not like any other angel story out there(psst! Hush, Hush; Fallen). The explanations were genuine. The story plausible (as paranormal story could be). The characters engaging and real. I loved Clara. She was not perfect, and I appreciate that. There are a lot of mysteries that continue to baffle me, like why is her mother so reluctant to tell her anything?? And is Angela really trustworthy? And who really is her mother and what was her--Clara's-- brother doing that night of the fire?? I'm really excited to read the next book, but I've heard from others who have been fortunate enough to receive an ARC that the second book, Hallowed, is depressing. I might wait until the last book in the trilogy comes out before reading the second. What can I say? I don't like depressing books!
