Maisie Dobbs is an engaging heroine. The mystery kept me guessing until the end. What can I say? It is a "goodread." ;) This is the second in the series (I believe there are 6 books.)

Probably my favorite book of all time. Guess it's because I never had to read it for school...

I like Jay McInerney's style. I generally like books that are more structured, but there was something about the way McInerney placed the words on the paper that made me continue reading. These are my favorite lines that I think summarize the protagonist's plight: "Something changed. Somewhere a long the line you stop accelerating." To me, 'Bright Lights, Big City' is more about loss than drugs and the 80s night club scene. The protagonist spends a majority of the novel spinning and doing things he regrets because of the lost of two women (one more important than the other) in his life.

A bit dry and at times overly full of detail, but its main themes are fascinating.

One of my all time favorites.
This is the sequel to Mrs. Mike, and is the account of the adopted Cree Indian daughter, Kathy as she discovers what makes her Oh-be-Joyful's daughter. This book highlights race relations in Canada as well as Kathy's experiences as a nurse during World War II. (Not a book for young girls as there are some sexual references.)
I bought this book to read the story by C.E. Murphy, which is part of her Walker Papers series. I enjoyed that story quite a bit. Of the other two stories, I only read one of them, the one by Mercedes Lackey, which was okay. I didn't even try to read the one by Tanith Lee because I know that her writing doesn't agree with me.

Sheer madness! I learned a lot about the Iditarod and can't imagine living that way for a couple weeks. Nothing like being at "one" with your dogs. The dangers are everywhere! The author had me riding along on the sled -- did a great job of describing the race.
Well, I can't say that I didn't enjoy it, because I did. I can't say that I didn't hold my breath for the characters, because I turned blue in the face a few times. I also fully admit that I'm heading to the library tomorrow to find the second one. That said, if I had a nickel for every hackneyed cliche George Martin employs in his writing, I'd be able to pay off my car loan. Seriously: "cut like a knife?" "Her glance was cold as ice"? Come on. It bugs me when fantasy novelists can put together plot and world-building and incorporating myth and making characters that are believable in their foibles and strengths, but can't write worth a flying blue-eyed barrow wight. Quit with the tired similes already and dig out a thesaurus! Or something! Oy. That said, the sequel BETTER not be checked out, or I'll be pissed.
