In the modern world, vampires remain hidden, but have created their own worldwide governing body that enforces the rules of vampire behavior, and distributes drugs that enable vampires to go out in the daylight and prevent humans from being turned by a vampire bite. A group of traditional vampires that just sees humans as a food source and wants to return vampire life to its old ways attacks the Federation with the intent of destroying it. Human police inspector Joel Solomon and Vampire Intelligence Agency agent Alex Bishop are thrown together to try and stop the uprising. The book is readable, but is nothing special. The whole mix of a thriller novel with vampires didn't really work for me. Some of the action scenes are decent, but vampires having gun battles with each other just removes most of the interest in using vampires in the first place. The story is predictable, with a romance between Joel and Alex that comes out of nowhere and an obvious ending. I might look for further volumes in the series, but they won't be a high priority.

not my favorite dostoevsky but good nonetheless. what makes this novel are the caricatures. they are very well detailed and thought out to become flesh yet remain one dimensional; i did not sympathize or empathize with any character.

This book has a really informative overview of real estate history in California -- a good read.

I found this a pretty fascinating book in the vein of David Simon's Homicide, although nowhere near as engrossing as that book. Adelstein is a good story-teller and the seamy underbelly of crime in Japan that he reveals (as well as the structure and day-to-day workings of both organized crime and the police) were interesting and edifying. It does get fairly depressing by the end as some of the worst of the human trafficking situations are detailed.

Nothing like I expected from an author of Linda Howard's caliber. It was a total disappointment. Even the lead characters were less than interesting. The bear indeed had a POV -- which didn't much interest me, either. It hurts to review and rate this book so low because I've been a fan of LH's books for many years. She's had some of the best romantic suspense novels I've ever read. Her heroes are almost always exceptional. However, there's just nothing I can say about "Prey" except I just didn't like it from the first page to the last page.

I hate giving ratings, because to say I liked The Almost Moon as much as I liked this book would be erroneous, but I don't know that the phrase "really liked" would be one I'd associate with this either. So nevermind the stars - I found the subject of this book to be utterly fascinating. Regardless of the extreme violence making headlines these days, I love Mexico and am intrigued by its people and culture. I've never been to the Sierra Madre, though, and this book made me realize that, while fascinating, it's probably not a place I'm likely to visit. At the risk of showing myself to be completely naive and uninformed, I was entirely unaware of the violent, drug-trafficking environment that is the Sierra Madre. I thought Richard Grant did a great job of showcasing all of the characters he encountered or learned of while traveling through and I think you get a good, if very limited, feel for what makes up the life and culture of the area. It does get a bit ... what's the word I'm looking for - kind of like the writing equivalent for "pitchy" in relation to singing? - spot on in some places and then just way off the mark in others, but on the whole a good read.

Set in New York's garment district. The main character, Harry Bogen, is a total schmuck. The sexism and sexual harassment in this book are amazing. He'd fire any secretary that wouldn't put out in a heartbeat. He makes quite a lot of money running crooked businesses and spends it all on shiksas. His good Jewish mother wants him to marry a nice Jewish girl, Ruthie Rivkin, but Harry seems to be determined to rid himself of all signs of his Jewishness. To the point where he even calls his business partner a hebe at one point. He is the definition of unscrupulous, incarnate. I must say, after I got used to it, I really started to enjoy the language though. He has an amazing, over-the-top, comic dialogue style that makes the book really move. They apparently made it into a musical with Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould in 1962, before they were famous.

No está mal, pero me gustó mucho más el primero. Este volumen se me ha hecho pesado a veces, y me he perdido entre las peripecias de los personajes (este es un defecto mío, no me centro).
