I teach this book. It's very cute. I think all the action is kind of back-loaded, though. Curtis does a great job with kids voices.

I loved, loved, LOVED this author's first two books, and this one was great, too. Even though it is a young adult book, I think any reader would enjoy it. It tells a story of a teenager who was abandoned by her mother and the trouble she has dealing with her lack of history, while at the same time giving clues about a group a kids who lived in the same town years before that are somehow connected to this girl. It creates a sort of mystery-feeling that helps move the story along, and there are a couple spots that need the push to get past the angsty-teenager pages. I see that in this book as well as the author's previous books that most of the problems for her teenage protagonists, the thing that sends them over the edge and makes all the adults suddenly worry and pay attention, is that they aren't told all the information. The adults around them, trying to "protect them," hide information. The teenagers want the answers, especially this character who doesn't know who she is or where she came from. And when you're at an age where you're trying to define who you are, not knowing is a big deal. Worth running away and getting in trouble over. My only issue with this book is that that tragedies seem a bit over the top, the people a little too damaged, but it's worth over-looking that minor flaw.

Didn't love this book...thought the author really lost the plot and meandered too much. It reminded me of reading Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, where there are hundreds of pages of tangents that barely relate to the main story. She creates interesting characters and describes the scenery well, but the overall effect was lacking and couldn't keep my interest.
This has been on my shelf for a few weeks now, and I'm very excited to get started on it this summer.

I’m always a fan of mysteries and so I was really intrigued with The Butterfly Clues especially when I found out that the main character Lo, has OCD and well my favourite television programme just so happens to be about a detective with OCD. However, they’re not the same but I still really enjoyed The Butterfly Clues. Not to mention that I love the cover, it’s absolutely gorgeous. I sat down and started reading The Butterfly Clues and I got swept up in all the mystery. Lo becomes obsessed with a girl who got murdered and she feels that if she can solve this mystery it might give her some closure about her brother’s death. Not only do you not know who killed Sapphire and why but you also don’t know what happened to Lo’s brother Oren for a really long time. While I have to say that I absolutely loved the mystery surrounding these two events I found that towards the end I was getting swept up in all of the emotions too. It was so well done and I just couldn’t help myself but feel Lo’s pain with her. One thing I really loved was that there’s things that are hinted at throughout the whole novel and so you get this vague idea of what’s going on in Lo’s life and in the whole murder and everything and then you get to see the whole picture and it is just so emotionally wrenching that I couldn’t help but tear up. I had guessed the whole whodunit part of the story but that wasn’t really the main part of the story. The main part was Lo and how she was so emotionally broken after her brother’s death, how her whole family is broken after Oren’s death. There were so many scenes that I felt were quite heart-wrenching to be honest. Overall, I absolutely adored The Butterfly Clues, I thought it was really touching and so emotional, not to mention a great mystery. I don’t really know what else to say about it other than it’s a truly amazing book and I look forward to reading more by Kate Ellison.

Frankl paints a picture of life inside the concentration camp and attempts to explain the different reactions of the prisoners. I would give 3 stars to the first 80% of the book and 5 stars to his section on Logotherapy (existential psychotherapy). I especially enjoyed his comments on psychotherapy historically aiming to alleviate the internal tension, while he believes the tension between what we have done and what we still need to do/become is paramount. Therefore, Frankl states that homeostasis is not the goal ... rather we thrive in life when we are experiencing existential tension (ex: while we struggle for our goals, struggle to become someone better, struggle to develop character).
I waited a long time for this book from the library, and had read several good reviews of it, but it did not strike me as a great read. (It seemed to take FOREVER for those twins to be born!) The surgical descriptions and the hospital conditions in Ethiopia were enlightning, but I felt that it was an overdose of medical terms. It took me nearly halfway through the book to become attached to many of the characters. When the setting changed to America, it was alarming to compare the hospitals of Boston and New York; this part seemed sadly, too realistic. I wonder if the positive changes that came about in the novel can really happen. I liked the story in some ways, but I guess I had my expectations set higher. The ending seemed rushed and full of coincidences, which did not improve my rating. I struggled between a two and three on this one, but went with a two due to the "soap opera" feeling I got from it.
