I just re-read this and enjoyed it as much or more than the first time. Such a great look at human psychology and how people react without the "confines" of society. Makes me wonder which characteristics would be dominant in me.

This was one of those books that I will always remember. It was so creative, disturbing, and thought-provoking. I was seriously on the edge of my seat (actually, couch or bed) in the middle of the book.

I guess like many classics at times this book was very boring and hard to read through. I do love the romance in it and the villians are truly terrifying. I would not want to cross them. I am glad the ending was somewhat happy even though a frined sacrificed himself in the end. I am glad the ms defarge got hers in the end and that ms pross got out of france safely. Overall it was a good story but at times confusing, but i think that had to do with more of the writing style of the time.

I loved how the book started out, as a conceptual creature design artist I found the explanation of animal behavior and its similarities to human behavior very intriguing. Animals like humans are creatures of habit and routine and this idea concerning how we perceive zoos and the freedom or well being and mistreatment of animals under such confounds to be inhumane or sometimes torturous was interesting. It doesn't go to say that zoos are neither good nor bad when the well being of an animal is concerned but it explains this objective concept in a rather unique light. It is only after we learn a bit about the life of animals in zoos and the zoo owner's son named Pi, that the real story begins. I would very loosely compare it to the film "Cast Away" though what takes place is such an unreal sequence of events that even the ending leads you questioning what really happened.

I first read Sappho's fragments as an undergraduate, and was deeply moved by the depth of her imagery, the deep wells of passion that she expresses.

When I took it with me, I didn't notice it was just A-TH (which is only one third of the Devanagari alphabet. Hmpf. But nice anyway. It's written in transcription, so no Devanagari inside, the accent is usually marked, and translations are given in German AND English (but not the etymological explanations). Cognates are usually from Greek, Armenian, Latin, Middle High German, sometimes Lithuanian and Old Church Slavonic. Some words seem to be loanwords from Dravidian languages, aha aha. It also contains some proper names and some explanations at the beginning.

Kerr's ability to write convincingly and sharply from the second person is particularly effective, especially in "How to Recover Lost Luggage in Mexico" and "The Last Locals on Folly." A fun romp through fashion hallmarks and nuances of the 80's. The characters immediately pull the reader into their stories; delightful.

This is the latest book in the Ladies #1 Detective Agency Series. My favorite parts are the descriptions of the land of Botswana, its culture and history. In this newest book all of the characters step out of their routines and explore their hidden aspirations.
