It's an interesting take on an alternate outcome between whites & natives. The book is written in diary form through the eyes of May Dodd, a woman who gave up her life in the east to marry a native in hopes to unite the two worlds. May ends up married to the clan chief, which puts her in an special point of view compared to the rest of the white women in her clan. The book gives a good depiction of native life in 1875 as well as the white man's desire for power.

A modern murder has its roots in Portugal during World War II. The novelist weaves the story between current murder and the past history in a very intriguing way. I'll look for other books by this author.
I read these books in 2008 when I got my first position as a high school librarian because the chicks were so mad for them. Two words: not impressed. Don't love the story line and not very well written in my opinion. Sorry team whoever...
A fun and slightly lighter read than a Harry Potter.

The most awesome general physics text ever! This is the best edition as well. Oh, the memories...
So I'm friends with the author, which would usually be a reason I'd be all that more critical of specifics in the book-a character out of place, an extra chapter where there needs be none, etc. etc. But in this case, this is a truly special book. It flows in pigeon English prose (never before done to my knowledge) like a poem about a child soldier in as yet unnamed West African nation separated by civil war. The images are striking, and the voice of the author is at once beautiful and profound. A quick read, but also a must read.
The premise of this book seems interesting--starting with old postcards, various writers and artist tell short stories about what might have happened. Unfortunately, most of the stories are just as ambiguous and curious as the postcards themselves. Only a tiny handful are at all memorable--some of them are just a random moment in time, like the postcard is, but without adding anything really interesting. Some of them just don't make sense (tic tac toe hustlers?) The art ranges from good to pretty terrible, which doesn't help. Overall, these stories are exactly as satisfying as digging through a random box of postcards; if you like that sort of thing, this is the book for you. Otherwise, there are many, many better collections.
intriguing!!
I can't remember a lot about this book - but I remember I really liked it!
