This book felt like the a first novel of someone who would later be a great writer....which is weird, because it was written 12 years after Land of Laughs. Great, twisty mystery, with clever structure and pacing; it really sucks you in so you can't put it down. Amazon's editorial reviews give too much away, so that spoiled some of the mystery for me, but not all of it. The end felt a little awkward, like Carroll couldn't decide whether to go all crazy and surreal or not. It felt like an author playing around with surrealism but scared to quite go there, which Carroll is definitely not. I guess he was experimenting with normality? Overall, a good, engaging read, but I didn't fall in love with it.

OMG! This book was better than I thought it could be! While I would have enjoyed a little more following the romance between Rehvenge and Ehlena, the story was phenomenal. If other readers enjoy the characters anywhere near as much as I do, it’s great to follow them. I don’t want to ruin anything so I can’t give any details. I agree with the comments that this book approaches more an urban fantasy rather than the standard romance, but the book really reveals the beauty in Ward’s writing.

Not the best Vonnegut

There are very few books that I just can't finish, but this was one of them. It had moments when I thought I could sink my teeth into this and then it turned to mush. I loved the Reader, so I thought this book would be equally fantastic. Maybe I should have finished it, but it just got too confusing with the literature he was trying to piece together with pieces of his life
If you enjoy Agatha Christie’s books with more exotic settings, such as Egypt and Asia, you may also like this series with a Welsh detective who works with the British in turn-of-the-century Cairo.

This is a really strange, dark fairy tale, hilarious and sad. It's underrecognized, so I encourage you to check it out. It takes place at a country house on the outskirts of town, where two adolescents have lived their whole lives. The catalyst for the action is their father's death; their mother died years ago. It's told in the first person, and the narrator has a language full of lively personal idiom that, through its innocence, makes great puns and swerves in meaning. This is all the more impressive in that it was originally written in French; the translation is very impressive. The tale gets darker and darker and through the narrator's take on reality (and language) raises some interesting questions about how socialization affects our ways of dealing with pain. The author teaches philosophy, according to the jacket, and I should add that this would probably be fascinating to anyone interested in Spinoza, as it draws a lot on his philosophy. Apparently. I don't know Spinoza myself, so I couldn't make heads or tails of the narrator's references to the Ethics.

I tried soooo hard to read this book. My husband loves it. Lots of people love it. But I just couldn't get into it. I appreciate the awesomeness of the Burgess Shale, I swear!

I love it when an author can write a character you think you won't like and end up making you root for her. That's what Julia London does here with Robin Lear. Her relationship with the hunky Jake is fun to read and I love the witty banter between them, I will definitely be checking out the rest of this series.
This book was awful. The dialogue felt forced, especially between the young girls in the book. The characters were awful - I couldn't finish it, it was so awful.
