This is probably my least favorite of the trilogy, not necessarily because it is less well-written than the others, but because the arrival of Mordred means the end of Arthur, and I hate having these stories come to an end. Actually, the character isn't known as Mordred throughout the book, but rather Dylan the Orphan. He grew up with Arthur's son from his first wife, but had no idea who he was until Nithe came for him when he was eleven. It always strikes me as a slightly sad book, since Dylan spends the whole of it trying to gain his father's acknowledgment and approval and find a place for himself within the framework of Camelot. A band of brothers springs up, giving him a family of sorts: Dylan (aka, Mordred), son of Arthur and Morgause, Borre, son of Arthur and Samana (his first wife), and Garath, son of Pelleas and Morgause. There are also the Lady Mal, who operates the local inn, plays dress-up as a bard, and takes on the role of older sister to Dylan and Viki, daughter of Pelleas, with whom Dylan falls in love. Royal romances never being easy things, that provides some twists of its own, and all of it tied up in the recognition, public or private, that Dylan so craves from Arthur.

This book has 4 stories with hellhounds in them. I really enjoyed Nalini Singh's story, Angel's Judgement, in the Guild Hunter series. It is about Elena's friend, Sara and how she found Deacon. I also liked Meljean Brook's Guardian's series, Blind Spot. I have not read any of this series, but might try it. I really loved the hellhound, Sir Pup, in this story! I read the other two stories but I didn't really like them. I give it a three for the two stories I liked.

Eh. basically the condensed vresion of his In Defense of Food. If you've already read the other, don't bother with this one - it's basically a big cut and paste job. If you haven't, read In Defense of Food instead of Food Rules, because taking the time (and measly hundred pages) to understand the background of the arguments that lead to these conclusions is worthwhile.

The letters of George Jackson from prison (11 years) to his family.
Ths is so good. I can't stop!
I'd give the book 5 stars for ambition. This is an 800pp abridgement of a seven-volume, 3500pp work on violence and its possible justifications. Vollmann illustrates all the "justifications" he can think of by discussing historical events and people, like Stalin, Trotsky, Pol Pot, Napoleon, Ghandi, Lincoln, and John Brown. He also uses people and places from his travels in Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia to talk about current rationales for violence. His intention is to create a comprehensive "moral calculus" to determine when violent means are acceptable, to create some type of rational framework for understanding when an individual or state should take up arms. While it's a hell of an attempt, and certainly thought-provoking, I don't think the "moral calculus" adds much to the philosophy of violence. But as a document of history and current events, it's fascinating.
