Guess what word that I wasn't aware I knew popped into my head when I was thinking about what to say about this book? Fusty. ="rigidly old-fashioned or reactionary" (I know, I had to look it up too). Maybe I read it in the book itself, or someone else's review? That said, I agree with Postman's sentiment (I've been vaguely anti-TV for over a decade and strongly anti-TV for the last 3 or 4 years). And he isn't just some TV-hating curmudgeon, either; he doesn't object to so-called "junk TV" at all, only to TV pretending to be "serious." He argues that the visual nature of that medium goes exclusively to entertainment, and that the pervasiveness of television has lead to an all-around entertainment culture that is bad for us because...well, I haven't gotten that far yet, so I don't know why. I struggled a bit with the first few chapters. Reading words like "epistemology" reminded me too much of my philosophy classes and my eyes glazed over. But when he got to the historical book/newspaper culture of the American colonies and moved from there into his actual argument, I perked right up and followed with a clear head. By the way, even though this was written in 1985, it's easy to extend all of his arguments to the internet. --update: I still don't know why. But the chapters on politics and televangelism were scalding. --update: The more I think about it, the more I think that Postman was being disingenuous when he said he had nothing against junk TV.
