This is a heartbreaking tale told by Jaycee Dugard, who was kidnapped at age 11 and was held hostage for 18 years. She shares openly about the abuse that she suffered - sexual, physical and mental. She tells about depending entirely on her kidnapper for everything and how he assisted her as she gave birth to their two daughters. Philip, the man who kidnapped her and his wife, Nancy, were drug addicts and total nutcases. He heard voices and blamed things that he did on what the angels told him. Jaycee and her daughters are survivors and they are learning to live in the real world and are trying to help others who are in difficult situations as well.

I thought the plot was interesting but unfortunetely the writing just didn't hold my interest. Pity really. I can't say exactly but the narrative wasn't flowing and the characters seemed a little too emotionless. I might Try reading it again and re assess my opinonf of it .

I read this a long time ago and I really loved it. It was very relevant at the time. Several of the characters were modeled after real people; and I got a kick out of some of the author’s characterizations.

I loved this book. I went into it with no expectations- haveing heard about it (surprise, surprise) on NPR. You never know what you're going to get when the book jacket describes a story set in a Depression-era traveling circus with an emotional elephant, all wrapped up as a love story. I read part of the first chapter online, and was hooked and had to go buy the book. I couldn't put it down, and once finished, I've actually read it again. True mark of a good book if I go back and read it.
Reviewed by Tasha for TeensReadToo.com Max Gordon is on the run. He was almost killed by an assassin, his dad has been kidnapped, and he only has one clue as to where he is. Still, he is determined to find him no matter what kind of danger faces him. With the one clue he is given, he figures out that his father is in the deserts of Namibia exploring a company that is about to hurt thousands of people. Those people know that Max's dad has found evidence against them and think that Max has knowledge of this evidence, as well. While he is on the mission to find his father, regardless of the evidence, the company is determined to kill Max. Max is aided with the help of Koga, a local bushmen, who has a very keen sense of the wild; Kallie van Reenen, a local girl who has a great knowledge of planes and the sky; and his best mate back in England. All three of these people form Max's support system as he embarks on the most grueling adventure imaginable, all in search of his father. Will Max be able to beat the odds and survive - or will his captors get the better of him? THE DEVIL'S BREATH is an action-packed book that any reader will find hard to put down. With every page turned, you don't know what's coming next, and you're on the edge of your seat. Throughout the book, you hear the story from different perspectives, whether it be the main story from Max, the antagonist's point of view, and even sometimes the story is heard from Max's two friends, who are helping him with his search to find his father. I thought that the use of alternating perspectives was interesting, but at times it got confusing because some of the characters sounded the same. While the author did a great job building up the book with lots of suspense, I did find parts of the story to be very predictable and not that interesting. Other parts of the book, though, definitely made up for this, and I found myself intrigued. At times the book got a bit violent, which I didn't think was necessary, but it may have been appreciated more by the male readership. Despite this fact, I think THE DEVIL'S BREATH would be a good read for all teens, and it was a good start to a potentially thrilling series.

I feel a little like this book was written just for me. -- I heard about a woman who got a job reordering an entire town. The numbers were off because the mayor had a counting problem, and she'd been hired to reintroduce 8. It'd been missing in some clocks. She'd also needed to go over the books and see if the adding was correct (which of course it wasn't, without 8) and to check all the signs. Drivers were apparently going off the highway, following the sign that said GAS: 2 MILES, to find nothing but dusty roads. The sign was supposed to say 88. It was a whole industry, townsfolk dashing over to gasless cars with cans of portable petrol. She was called a number doctor. That was my dream job. --Aimee Bender, An Invisible Sign of My Own

I read this book for my english class. Although it was not a drag, it was unexciting. i found it did not have a climax, and there was little to no character development. In fact, if it was not for Shakespeare's use of vapid anti-semitism, than there would not be much of a play at all.

Posted at Oh My Books! I love cozy mysteries, and the Party Planning Mystery series is one of my favorites. This time, Presley Parker is organizing a vampire party at a cemetery to promote the new Hollywood movie. It's going to be fantastic, with hot actors and awesome special effects, except that a dead body is found the night before the party. Presley is such a fun character. She's independent and has a need to resolve every mystery, specially the ones that involves her parties. She wants to discovers who is responsible for this death, and of course she has the help of Detective Luke and her boyfriend, Brad. I loved to read more of Brad. He's a very realistic boyfriend, even with his weird job. But I wanted to read more of Presley's friends from her company, it was a shame they didn't appear very much, but maybe in the next books? Also, I didn't know who was the killer. It did surprised me in the end, which isn't easy to do. I really like the party tips every book in this series has. This one, of course, has tips to your vampire party, which would be cool if you are organizing a Breaking Dawn party... Overall, How to Party with a Killer Vampire didn't disappointed me. It was easy to read and fun, and I highly recommend this series.

This was my first Franzen novel, and I really enjoyed it. I can't remember a time when I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time ~ and he made me feel this way many times. This is one seriously dysfunctional family, but one unlike any other that I've read about. Like John Irving, Franzen's character development is superb ~ I truly felt as if I knew each of the characters personally - and whether I liked them or not, I felt invested in the story and eager to see how it resolved.
