I thought this was a very interesting read. McKinnon has created an alternate world of sorts in which a group of people physically removed themselves from the world in order to start over. It’s a really cool concept, and the explanations McKinnon gives are imaginative and very well thought out. The Refuge, as it is called, resides way out in the mountains and is protected by a dense wall of fog, keeping unwanted visitors out, that is, except Narissa, who somehow ends up inside the Refuge, discombobulated and hurt. The explanations continue, and it’s a really cool idea/concept, somewhat reminding me of the movie The Village in which everyone resides inside a barrier in a park, unknowingly hiding from the real world. I loved The Village, and I really enjoyed this novel as well... To read my full review (9/22): http://bookvacations.wordpress.com/20...

Hey, check out that movie cover. You know what's missing? A bodice. Anyway, A.S. Byatt goes apeshit in this novel. Like, she incorporates her own epic poetry, and it works. You're reading along, thinking, nah, you're crazy, A.S. Byatt! Totally crazy!.

I enjoyed this book very much - partly due to the description of how the author and his guide dog emerged safely from one of the Towers on 9/11, but especially due to the insight he offered about the reality of being blind. Blind since birth, he was blessed with parents who resisted encouragement to put him in a school for the blind and mainstreamed him in every way. He benefited greatly from their trust and guidance and throughout his life, has made his mantra: "why not?" I learned quite a bit about the tools and support for the blind - highly recommend this book.

I'm going to have to keep this short because I just finished Jasper Fforde's, The Fourth Bear and I have to RUN out to get another one of his books! Too much fun - I was in stitches over this - I love it when you have to stop reading because you're laughing too hard to continue! All of our old favorites from the nursery have grown up - and some of them are qutie naughty - Goldilocks, the bears, Jack Sprat(t!), Punch & Judy and a cliff hanger involving..... cucumbers!! Read it - you'll love it!
An oldie and goodie.
