don't know why the average rating of this is so low. It paints a beautiful picture of a mountain town that makes you feel the seclusion. It then questions aspects of humanity that we all feel; greed, integrity.

Bill Bryson makes the history of doors, windows, toilets, and corn interesting.

I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be a plausible scenario. The author was inventive but realistic with the events that unfolded. I thought I'd have a hard time listening (audio book) to a book that was completely told through the eyes of a young girl ~ since I'm a grown man (father of 2 young girls) but the young girl's struggles were either handled maturely or the author described enough that I was able to understand where the girl was coming from. While the book did deal with issues a 16 year old girl would deal with, it didn't feel like it was just "girly emotions". In the end, they were all just human emotions and easy to relate to.

i thought this was a very good, readable, insightful book about suicide. starting with an anecdote of his father's death by suicide when he was a teenarger, joiner attempts to explain the reason for suicide in a concise way encompassing almost every reason for suicide, which is a first attempt (in his opinion after surveying the literature throughout almost 200 years); and i think he does it successfully. he explains suicide as developing from three traits of the victim: (1) the victim feels useless, powerless, unable to affect his world (2) the victim feels disconnected from people, which in my opinion is very closely related to the first, but he makes enough of a distinction to validly separate the two (3) the person has overcome his fear of pain and death, so people in the military, for example, have high success rates of suicide. a very good, poignant book, but i have one question to ask him, why did he title the book "why people die by suicide" instead of "why people commit suicide"?

It's very interesting to read about this iconic star of stage and screen in her own poetic words. I found the first 100 pages a bit dry and overly descriptive. Others might and probably do find it quite enjoyable though. Once she gets to be a teenager things pick up a bit. The chapters about The Boyfriend, and particularly My Fair Lady and Camelot are fascinating. It's worth a read for anyone who is a true fan, or who enjoys biographies.
The English continues to be of my preferred style, and the story was interesting while it lasted, however, I think a span of too long time was being squeezed into one book, making it a little less enjoyable. Three years of Anne's life was squeezed in here, so nothing really got explored much. Anne would be jumping from Redmond and back to Green Gables, and so forth... Anne's feelings didn't have a chance to be elaborated...what really made her say no to Gilbert? What sealed her decision about Roy? What did she expect with the little necklace from Gilbert? And this "book of revelation", yes, she knew she loved Gilbert, but what made her have this decision? Perhaps all the different marriages she encountered taught her enough, but, that's just what I imagine and not really happened (I wouldn't know). I still genuinely liked the book, I would have been happier with a little more explanation on certain things...

This is one of the most awful books I have ever tried to read. I couldn't stomach reading past the 3rd chapter. The way the story line is written, makes the characters talk and act like pre-teens. It was very immature and too much talking, not enough story line. I have never stopped reading a book because of the way it was written was like nails on a chalk board, but here's my first.

Absolutely the funniest book I have ever read. Hands down.
The book itself is informative and I learned more about Afghanistan but it was pretty sad too. A foregin journalist lives with a midle-class Afghani family and observes firsthand the unfairness placed upon the women and children in families.

Great way to learn about the culture of NY in the early 1920s. Fun book, I really liked it.
