This book is something that everyone should read. It gives personal accounts of 6 people the survived the A-bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. It really allows you to see different people as... People. Not Japanese... PEOPLE. Something we all need to keep in mind.

At first I didn't care much for this book at all. I found Catherine very whinny throughout the whole book, and Heathcliff very cruel. If Catherine wasn't eaten up with pride and arrogance and would not have married for status then she might have been happy. Heathcliff hurt by her refusal for ever accepting him because of status (even though she really loved him) cause him to completely cruel in his revenge on her. The ending is what made me like this book because Cathy and Hareton's behavior atoned for all the horrible behavior that Catherine and Heathcliff did to one another. If you can make it all the way through the book, you will see why this book is considered a classic gothic novel that everyone should read.

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature. I'm not much of a traditional heroic fantasy fan and The Leopard Mask, the first installment of The Guin Saga (now at 124 novels), won't be changing my habits. This is a rather uninspiring tale of two twins (Remus and Rinda) whose kingdom has fallen to an evil army and who are now trying to stay alive among all of the ghouls, demons, and other nasties who live in the marches. They are saved by an intriguing amnesic warrior (Guin) who, for some unknown reason, has an irremovable leopard mask fused to his face. The writing is only serviceable. I don't know if this is due to the original Japanese text or to the English translation but it just doesn't grab me. The perspectives change abruptly, the dialogue is stilted, and the omniscient narrator tells too much -- sometimes in a tone that would be used to teach children. The plot of The Leopard Mask is quick as it moves from action sequence to action sequence. But for all of the fighting, being captured, escaping, and yelling ("Guin, look out!" "Rinda, Rinda!" "Remus!" "Ahh!" "The door! They're breaking down the door!" "Run!" "Guin, it's coming this way!" "Run, quickly!" "Guin! Quickly! Are you okay?" "Arragh!"), my heart rate didn't rise once. There is little character development in The Leopard Mask. With their platinum hair and violet eyes, the twins seem more like a couple of manga characters than real humans, but I'm sure readers will get to know them better in future books. The masked warrior is somewhat intriguing (or perhaps it's the rippling muscles that have deluded me) and I would like to know what's up with the leopard head, but I'm not about to read 123 more installments to find out. I have a feeling that The Guin Saga might be more enjoyable in its manga format. Read this review in context at Fantasy literature.

I think this is my favorite book in this series. As much as I enjoyed the interplay between Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell, it was starting to feel forced and I didn't think the author could sustain a series based purely on their relationship. This book moves away from that, focusing instead on the relationship between Archie and reporter Susan Ward. The tension in this story just crackles from start to finish--it's wonderfully paced and manages to weave in some history of the city of Portland, where the series takes place. It's interesting to me that the weakest part of Cain's books tends to be the crimes under investigation, but the characters and the pacing are so well handled that it's not as big a drawback as you'd think. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
This Reacher installment seemed slow moving, kind of boring, and unrealistic compared to the previous books in the series. Hope the next one is better.
good premise, great voice. one of those "special" narrative voices i.e. "curious incident of dog at night," except Howard is an adult of normal intelligence and sensibility. He just cannot speak, so he is trapped inside his head. Really good read.

Might have given this four stars but it was a little choppy. Using a bombed out zoo in Warsaw to hide and help Jews during WWII ? If it weren't a true story you might not buy the premise and think it is a bit far-fetched. Amazing piece of history ~ the truth behind the story.

What a legend. It jumps around a lot and MAN does she love to talk about her little black dress and her hair and her pink boots, but still, what a legend
Good and fast read. I thought that the characters and story lines were interesting.
Love, love, love this book. Read it out loud to my kids -- ages 7 and 8. It's a book about ordinary kids. Models good sibling relationships. Excellent and interesting characters. Funny and fun.
