The first time I have read one of her books and loved it. Very similar to Jodi Picoult. Will definitely be looking out for some more of her books.

The father of food writing, I'm enjoying reading this in the original french (thank you, french degree), as the french language inexorably leads itself to more poetic and sensual descriptions of the pleasures of eating. The translation would be pretty good, too, if you're into culinary history.

A collection of just two essays, the first of which is highly personal and equally moving eulogy delivered by Derrida at Levinas's funeral. The second essay is a longer introductory address delivered at a symposium for the first anniversary of Levinas's death. It is at once a radical rereading of Totality and Infinity according to the insight that "the vocabulary of welcoming...provide[s:] the keys..to this book", an examination of the relationship between ethics and justice--of the way in which the face-to-face encounter with the Other is always also an encounter with the third, a suggestion contra Irigaray (and against his own previous reading of Levinas) that Levinas's reading of feminine alterity can function as a "feminist manifesto", an exploration of Levinas's always ambiguous relationship to Zionism, an exposition of an ethics and politics of hospitality in the context of global concerns around immigration (both legal and illegal [sans papiers:]), and a thinking through of Levinas's claim that peace is prior to war to the extreme paradox that war may be the continuation of peace by other means.

A great book from one of my all-time favorite authors and series.

A moving, poignant story about three women – Kavita, a mother in rural India who is forced to give her daughter up for adoption to protect her from infanticide, Somer an American doctor unable to bear a child and Asha the daughter Kavita gives up and Somer adopts. The author does a remarkable job exploring and expressing the emotions these women feel, each struggling with their losses and fears – Kavita racked with guilt and tortured by memories of leaving her crying infant in an orphanage, Somer’s suffering over her infertility and later her insecurities as an adoptive mother and Asha’s yearning to find her roots and come to terms with the fact that her parents gave her up. The book is a tribute to mothers everywhere. Besides Somer and Kavita, there are two other strong mothers in the novel – Dadima and Ba. The book is also about family. In today’s society in which we have so many kinds of families, the message of “Secret Daughter” is that “at some point the family you create is more important than the family you are born into”. Asha goes to India seeking out “one family and ended up discovering another”. The book explores social problems like the disregard for female children in India. The plot is excellent, moves smoothly and keeps the reader riveted. Whereas the female characters in the book are well drawn, the male characters in the book are all but ignored so one may complain that the book does not give all characters fair representation. Men may dismiss the book as chick-lit but when you consider the serious topics the book explores which is part of our lives today, the book is relevant for male and female readers alike. An excellent first novel which I highly recommend

Mac's sister is murdered while studying in Dublin and she is sure that she can help solve the crime if she goes there to investigate. From the minute she arrives, Mac starts seeing strange creatures and getting into a ton of trouble. Then she meets Barrons, a mysterious and dangerous man who she reluctantly works with as she tries to find out what happened to Alina. I've given this three stars but I'm still not sure whether I really liked it that much or not! I really disliked Mac the Bimbo From Hell whose constant wardrobe changes and endless prattling about her nail varnish annoyed me just as much as her inability to accept what was going on and follow simple instructions. She is the type of girl that would drive you to murder so I have sympathy with the Fae on this one! Barrons did nothing for me as a romantic hero-cold, cruel, nasty and with a delight for physical violence against women. Being dragged around by my hair and almost passing out as my ribs are crushed by him is not what I'd want from a man, I can tell you that right now. I've read lots of reviews where people are talking about how much they love Barrons but I despise violent men being packaged up as a perfect boyfriend that we should all aspire to have. No thanks! In spite of these flaws and me not liking the Fae very much, something in the writing kept me reading it to the end, which is unusual when I despise the main characters so much! So I will give book 2 a try and reserve judgement on the series until then.
Takes some getting used to the voice, but a good read.
Marvelous way to spend a Spring Sunday. Sprinkle with wild strawberries. This is first rate writing on an eye-opening natural topic
A little tough to get into, and sometimes hard to follow but all in all very beautiful musings on nature and spirituality/philosophy...
