A very unusual book -- but Neil Gaiman, him of Stardust, is an unusual author. What are we ready to do for love? How far are we willing to go? What is the nature of friendship - and betrayal? These are only some of the fundamental questions Gaiman asks while taking us on a spectacular tour of London's underworld, where magic -- and horror -- can take many different forms, and where appearances can be deceiving. The book is a mystery as well as a fairy tale and I promise you, you will not be able to put it down. And, you will never look at a city in the same way again.
Nope - not for me.

This book was kinda weird. I usually finished a MR book in about two days but this one really bored me. Maybe it was because I have been reading only MR for the past week but I wasn't all that interested in this book …
Of all the classic sci-fi I’ve read lately, this was the most enjoyable. Hard science taken as a matter of faith, wild and exciting landscapes, an overbearing mentor whose obsession is dangerous and rewarding, thrilling chilling close scrapes with death, a hardcore no-nonsense love interest, and a thoroughly weenie protagonist. This book really stands up well to the test of time. I look forward to reading it again in ten years.

I'm a believer in magic, so I always love a good YA fantasy novel. This one has an amazing heroine who is strong, determined, and wants to live life on her terms. I like the unexpected twist towards the end of the book where comes to terms with what her gift in life is.

The opening is incredible, with terrifying Cathy Ames thoroughly and shockingly entertaining us. And unlike some books that hook the reader immediately, it doesn't run out of great material early on. An epic tale of generations. Very rooted in history. Talks about the history of central California, Ford Model T, etc. So much going on in this book, so many morals taught.. and you close it with an optimistic outlook. Long, but worth your time.

I like the concept of chaplettes, telling a story in a non-traditional way. I like snappy writing, tinged with wink-wink nudge-nudge sarcasm. I don't like the whole meta thing--Marx inserting how hard it is to fill pages and then adding charts and asides. In the reviews I've read this is considered Marx's way of illuminating the process, allegedly it is very funny. I didn't really find it to be so. Believe me, I am a fan of the footnote and the aside, but at least for me Marx's asides didn't illuminate anything for me. Otherwise, I enjoyed it very much.
A very moving and powerful novel. Forget the light hearted "classic" mood of Jane Austen, this book is full of darkness and madness. The story is very twisted and complex, but worth it in the end! Although sad, dark, and quite gothic, if you get into it it is truly a rewarding book. Not one of my favorite classics, but still worthy of your time.

A well written novel with multiple perspectives; Not an easy thing to do. I have read many books where each chapter changes PoV. While reading "The weight of Silence" I was never confused as to who was narrating. You teally get into each character's head throughout the events of the day the girls go missing; as well as over the years and how the relationships formed. I highly recommend this book.
