Tried too hard to be something!

I was surprised with this novel and I think it is Marian Keyes' best novel yet. It tells the story of an Irish politician's upcoming marriage and the effect it has on four women's lives. Loved it!

Bought this because I was 20 pages from finishing Neuromancer, and it looked like the least hateful pick in the Chicago airport bookstore. (I was also trying to find something that could hold my attention after 250+ pages of hardcore, fast-paced cyberpunk action.) I finished The Road in two sittings. Did not look up from the book except to refill coffee. Cried at the end, and I was in fight-or-flight mode the entire time I read it. I was hoping someone would try to steal my bag so that I could unleash some adrenaline. Unambiguously recommend.

This is a lovely novel, as acerbic as it is true, perhaps unfortunately for all of us. The first sentence: "I have noticed that when someone asks for you on the telephone and, finding you out, leaves a message begging you to call him up the moment you come in, and it's important, the matter is more often important to him than to you." I'd never read anything by Maugham, and I'd definitely go back for more.
A wonderful coming-of-age tale that sweeps you right along with Marjorie through the ups and downs of her tumultuous, rebellious life through the 30's, 40's and 50's.

Consisting of seven easy-to-read but challenging-to-grasp stories that are beautifully put-together, The Chronicles of Narnia is a classic that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, all backgrounds, and all belief systems. I will read this book again and again.

I love books about young people with brain diseases/mental illness/illness/autism; the teenage boy in this book is autistic. This is ostensibly a mystery and I love mysteries also, but there wasn’t really much of a mystery here – the compelling thing to me about this book is the way this young man’s mind works. Many personality traits and behaviors of this character rang so very true, a few somewhat less so. But I really enjoyed his unusual narrative voice. Given the situation of this young man, I was pleasantly surprised because of the many humorous parts there were and I was very amused at times. It was a fun read.

Miranda and her brother suffer an emotional blow when they are involved in an awful car accident. To help them heal, their parents take the family to York for an extended trip. York has a charming feel to it with a winding maze of cobblestone streets and old buildings. Beneath the surface, however, lies a mysterious past. While in York, Miranda sees ghosts, lots and lots of ghosts. The ghosts themselves are unique because they have the injuries that they acquired when they died. Spooky indeed! Miranda is not alone in seeing ghosts. Nick, the local boy who teaches Miranda about York, has a painful past of his own. I liked how Team Nick and Miranda unraveled the mystery behind the ghosts. The ghosts have their own stories that they share with Miranda. I was especially touched by the story of a little girl named Mary who died at the hands of her caretaker. I wouldn’t have expected that I would be moved by a ghost’s story, but I was. There’s another boy who lives across the street from Miranda. She can see him from her window, but he is mostly a mystery. And there are also some really weird things happening around town, as if various ghosts weren’t enough weirdness for one book. The plot starts out a little slow, but I’m glad I gave it a chance because it picked up nicely and then I couldn’t stop reading. Dark Souls is a spooky mystery with an extra unique setting. RATING 4 Liked COVER COMMENTS So cool. York is exactly as I pictured it with the narrow, stone streets and old buildings. Miranda has spotted a ghost. He really does look like a ghost since he’s all blurred out. Such an original cover!

I really loved this book. It has an unusual style, but is beautifully written. The story, narrated by Death, tells of a young girl in Nazi Germany and the importance of books and words in her life. In the book, Death often muses how amazing it is that humanity can be capable of such ugliness and such beauty. Zusak presents this theme through his troop of good, courageous characters up against the force of the Nazis in a very moving way. The book is considered Young Adult fiction, but it is definitely something adults will enjoy.
Despite the fact that this book was overall rather slow to read, occasionally cumbersome in its use of language, and rather depressing, I enjoyed it. However, I must admit that I read it in pieces, rather than straight through, so that may have made it more bearable. I enjoyed the depth to which Hardy developed his characters, and all the intricacies (and dysfunctions) which he managed to describe within human relationships. All in all, not a bad read for a classic, but it is definitely not a book to read if you are depressed or suffering from relationship problems.
