I’ve always liked T.C. Boyle’s style of writing, and his topics are always new and interesting. In Talk Talk he takes on the specter of identity theft, but approaches it with the insight, novelty, and humor that marks all his books. Dana Halter is a happy and successful teacher with a nice boyfriend and a good job. She also happens to be deaf, while her boyfriend is hearing. One day during a routine traffic stop she finds herself arrested and taken to jail for things she didn’t do. It eventually becomes clear that her identity has been stolen. When she finds that the police and the government are unwilling or unable to do anything about it, she resolves to go after the man responsible herself. Her boyfriend decides to put his job and his life on the line to go with her. Boyle then introduces us to the thief: a man with his own life, needs, and reasons for doing what he does. The ensuing cat and mouse game between the two turns into a cross-country chase that will wholly engage you in the lives of the characters, as well as what it means to be who we are, and how we all communicate with each other. Boyle’s descriptions of the events in this story are so compelling that you will find your heart racing and your nerves on edge with the difficulty of the situations the characters find themselves in.

The bar is set pretty low on Nautical Fiction (outside of O'Brian and Forrester) - but this one doesn't quite come up to even that low level.

I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. I'm conflicted...I couldn't put it down and thought the story was well composed, but the changes in the timeline occasionally left me confused that one character didn't know what we just learned in the previous chapter. I also found it hard to picture some of the central characters. I think their literal voices were distinct during dialog, but I had no clear visual image of them, and I'm more visual than auditory. I got this as a free Kindle book, but all in all, I'd buy the book. However, I wouldn't tell anyone to put it at the top of their to-read list.

The holocaust is such a scary thing to even try to wrap my brain around. We can read details and hear facts, but it is through books like this one where we can really FEEL how scary going through this experience would have been. It is clearly and simply written, but with the detail and the characters to bring you right into the room and experience the feelings of the families. It is a testament to the strength of will and a triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity of the worst kind. It really makes you appreciate the freedoms we have.

** spoiler alert ** Two and a half stars. The blurb had me intrigued. I was looking for WWII novels because I had been reading other ones and this war that had always seemed so distant to me was suddenly much more interesting and horrifying. I felt like I needed to know more, to understand. Amandine offered a little bit of what I was after, but really, the book itself did not interest me that much. It took me a while to read it, which is a sure fire way of knowing, for me, if I liked a book or not - If I like it, I tear through it! The writing was okay. And I did want mother and daughter to be reunited, but not enough to care that they didn't by book's end. Actually, I found the ending quite satisfying. That knowing, but not knowing, it worked.

This book is a collection of poems by Billy Collins. A lot of the poems have to do with nature in some way, and are well written. Some were serious, some humorous, and all make you think. However, his poems didn’t particularly hit home with me, nor do anything for my love of poetry. It’s not because his writing is bad, on the contrary, everything is written very well. The writing style he used though did not connect with me personally, and I didn’t attain any enjoyment from reading this, even all the way through. I liked one or two poems, but on the whole it was not good enough for me to read again.

The Motorcycle Diaries highlighted the long and turbulent adventure of Ernesto "Che" Guevera, a young doctor at the time, and his friend, Alberto Granado. They go on a cross-continental journey searching for new lands that though close in proximity to their homeland appear foreign, no pun intended, to them. They find that though different in some respects there in a brotherly bond between them and their continental neighbors. The largest difference I found between Argentinian and US American cultures is the fact that though there is migration and emigration of peoples to other countries the bond the have culturally prevents the level of bitterness the US Americans have with our Neighbors to the north and south. The Authors purpose in writing the text was to express his findings and adventures to those who could learn something from them. The main evidence of this is in the way the text portrays their journey the vivid descriptions inspire and the bonds formed among characters are touching. The fact that the Author published his diaries as a book also atests to the purpose of the book. The theme of the text is that no matter how different two people or peoples are they have a bond through humanity that when combined with good will can conquer almost any obstacle. This theme is evident throughout the book when the travelers are hosted by strangers who later become friends. this theme is also prevalent in the thinking and ideals of Che in his more revolutionary day following the trip portrayed in the book. I highly recommend this text. I found it inspiring the extent of the journey that was fueled by pure ambition and dreams of progress. Despite the sappy inspirational crap there is still a lot to gain from the book. Be it the look into the birth of a revolutionary, or the struggles that made him what he became, this book has something for everyone. This is the best book I've read in a while.

A decent overview of Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism, Baptists, Pentecostals, and Methodists. He gives a brief history, major beliefs, and things to appreciate/learn from them. For the most part he is respectful of all traditions/denominations, however I feel not as much in regards to the Baptists as it is the only tradition that he includes jokes regarding. In my opinion, that was out of line and out of place. Additionally, on page 119 he says "United Methodists still value the intellect and believe they are not to "check their brain at the door" when they enter church." Ummmm....and other denominations do??? That aside, it is a good read and helps lay out the basic beliefs of the above mentioned denominations.

Saw the movie and want to give Mr.King a chance to redeem himself - he was once the best! This was pretty entertaining. I thought it was nicely paced and suspenseful. I must say-I liked the ending. They didn't know how things would turn out for them and neither do we-the movie's ending was so shocking and upsetting. I liked this better. Perhaps Steve should stick to short stories for now!
