Brilliant account of what it was like for a young woman in the years leading up to, during and post WW1. Vera Brittain makes it all so vivid and personal. She constantly poses the question 'what was WW1 all about?'. Why was it necessary for that generation to go such sacrifice? and Should future generations make similar sacrifices?? Her life is bound up with her thirst for Literature and later History, her determination to serve her country as young men of her generation were doing and further the cause of gender equality. She later becomes involved in Internationalism and politics in general but her stance is always rooted in her experience of peoples lives in England and abroad as affected by post-war policies. Very direct and readable - Vera Brittain wears her heart on her sleeve and we get to know her all the better because of that.

I read the book after I watched the movie, which I never like doing. And this is one of the few times I liked the movie better than the book. It's a really good storyline, and i enjoyed it for the most part.

These type of books tend to be hit or miss with me, depending on my frame of mind and the subject matter and writing style. I have the opportunity to go to a book-signing by this author this weekend and wanted to at least read some of what she wrote before meeting her. I ended up finishing the whole book! I was really drawn into the story of Michal and it had me going back to my Bible to check out various events that happened. I'm looking forward to reading the next books in the series.

Crazy book, but it's almost hypnotic the way it pulls you in. I read it over ten years ago, and this book still has a strong impression left on me. Another anti-utopian, nuclear-aftermath book. Very strong imagery, and shows the will we have to survive.

Much better than the first book. I had to stop myself doing a little happy dance in the library when it showed up :P Still not as good as the first trilogy though, it has a lot to live up to and for me it doesnt. Still worth a read.
