I am not very religious at all, but I have always been interested in reading the Bible. In this book, the author takes the Gospel of Luke, and breaks it down into manageable chunks (never more than 1 page and usually less). He explains the meanings of the passage. Michael Card keeps your interest in the Bible verses, and he is very good at tying it all together so that you also have an understanding of the big picure (how the events in the gospel relate to what is going on during that historical time period, etc). I found it very fascinating. I would be interested in reading other gospels, etc that Michael Card explains like this.

Jimmy has lived in Oakland, California his whole life and has no interest in leaving. Then Jimmy's best friend, Sara, moves to New York. After much angst, Jimmy decides to go to New York himself and tell her his true feelings for her. His grand gesture and romantic plans don't quite pay off. This was delightfully sarcastic and snarky, with nerd jokes that I very much enjoyed. It's bittersweet, and doesn't have a happy ending. If you're a bit of a cynic and like nerdy pop culture references and mockery of hipsters, you'll love this.

Good, hadn't read this since college. Love Charles Lamb and Harold Nicholson the best. Maybe Joseph Addison. Or E.V. Lucas?

I was afraid I would have trouble finishing this book in 3 weeks, since it's unrenewable at the library with so many people having it on hold. I finished it in one week - and could hardly put it down. With every chapter I could not believe what new challenge he faced and that this story is true. What a remarkable person and a great life lesson for what your mind and body can endure with the right attitude. It was also a good historical lesson about WWII and that era.
This is an absolutely masterful weaving of English history, folklore and impeccable manners. If you like erudite fantasies written by Oxford scholars, if you like footnotes, if you like alterna-history, if you like Napolenoic wars, if you like Jane Austen, give this one a try.
This was a fun and sweet story with a cute little mystery thrown in.
Wow, really bad. Hated the dialog, found it very hard to get through. I only read until the end because it was a book club selection. Had it not been, I would have put it down the minute I started reading Deaver's version of African American Vernacular. Embarrassing!

Eh.
Thought-provoking and compelling, but ultimately, the author's logic takes as many leaps as the more conventional cause-and-effect relationships that he critiques
