This was one of those books that was good for me to read just to see what life was like in the early 1900's; how so many struggled and came through their hardships. However, it's one that I doubt I will read again. Once is enough. It was a book that I wouldn't "drop everything" to read.
I LOVE these books!!!!! I can't wait to get the next one....

I got about half way to three quarters through this book about 2 years ago,and I stopped reading it and never started again. Which I rarely do. Not sure if it was mostly because I didn't love the story or if I was disapointed that it was nothing like I had expected it to be. I definitely want to finish though - I'm planning to start from the beginning and try again shortly.

While this may not be the best book on this topic, it is worthwhile simply in order to make one consider a new perspective. The section on biblical symbolism advances some important arguments.

This is possibly the best book I read last year. It's absolutely enthralling.

I won this in a first reads giveaway. I haven't learned about Greek mythology since grade 8, but I was happy to revisit it. Especially in such a different manner! The book contains scenes to be acted out by students, followed up with supplemental information about each of the myths. I could visualize the entertainment value for students of all ages, although, as an especially shy introvert in high school, the mere thought of actually participating caused me to break out in cold sweats! The myths were well chosen to parallel important issues that may arise in teenage life. If you know anything about Greek mythology, you may realize that the subject matter is often, at the very least, dark, bordering on morose. The dialogue written by Zachary Hamby brings a much needed comedic relief to otherwise morbid tales. It is also modern enough to keep teens interested, tying in pop culture references in an absolutely hilarious fashion. I loved the choice of discussion topics, often intermingling different media (listening to songs, watching movies or visiting websites), and I shout out a great thank you for the pronunciation guide, which I desperately needed! Overall, this book could be used as such a great tool for teachers, or simply a fun read. Versatile, educational, and delightful!

As fun as the first book, if not more so, this part really benefits from concentrating on Annabeth and Percy, with Grover having a much smaller part. While Grover is a good character, it allowed us to read more about Annabeth, and learn more about her. Ever as unpredictable, ever as enjoyable, its quite a gripping and easy read. It is quite accessable for older teens like myself despite the fact Percy is only 13. The book is escapism, really, and truly brings you into this intruging world painted wonderfully through Rick Riordan's description. You never, ever really know whats going to happen next. Cannot wait to read the next book.
Khrys is right! History, astronomy, medicine, physics, mathematics, religion, culture, and politics are interwoven with a compelling family story. How do bookstores decide where to place this one? That, to me, indicates an excellent read.
I never read anything by Ivan Doig before, assuming he wrote "westerns". Then I heard an excerpt read aloud on our local NPR station. What I've been missing! This novel has wonderful characters, a strong sense of place, wonderfully comic, and heartbreakingly poignant. Doig almost perfectly captures the span of a few months for these characters--as they and the whole world wait for Halley's comet to appear in the early part of the century. He paints a vivid picture of the existence of the dry farming homesteaders on the brink of change with the introduction of irrigation. I was completely drawn into their lives and eager to see what happened next.
