What an amazing, unthinkable, crazy life Louis Zamperini had! Nearly every page I couldn't believe that he was still alive. Since reading it, I have felt both guilty and grateful for the easy, peaceful life I have. So well written too. It is to read a biography like this where I wasn't annoyed at the writing. It flows so well that I could hardly remember that it was nonfiction.

I loved the topic of this newest Jodi Picoult book (although I read this back in March so my use of the word ‘newest’ may be in question)! Married couple, Zoe and Max, divorce after nine years of marriage and many failed pregnancies. Shortly afterward, Zoe, a music therapist, meets and falls in love with a high school guidance counselor. A guidance counselor who also happens to be a woman. Meanwhile, Max turns to alcohol to drown his sorrows and then eventually repents and finds “truth” and peace in the conservative Christianity practiced by his older brother. Zoe and Max, in their attempt to make a family had frozen many embryos. Zoe and her new partner, Vanessa, want to implant the embryos into Vanessa and finally have the family Zoe has been dreaming of. Max’s new religious views lead him to believe that being gay is a sin and that gay couples should not be allowed to have children. A court battle begins as Max and Zoe fight for custody of their unborn children. This book started just a little slow for me. The end of Zoe and Max’s relationship and the beginning of the relationship between Zoe and Vanessa felt like background (albeit necessary background) to the “meat” of this novel- the court battle over the frozen embryos. With that trigger, the book really took off and kept this reader completely engaged. Unfortunately, the end left me wanting a little more… more resolution with the Lucy character and some mention of Zoe’s mom in the final chapter. While it was clear to me that Sing You Home was thoroughly researched and well-thought out, I did think it was transparent throughout the book that Picoult is an atheist. What I did not realize until I had finished the book was that Picoult’s son recently came out, so I am certain this topic hit home for her. As always, Picoult’s knack for portraying two sides of a very controversial issue did not disappoint. I loved the controversy in this book! All in all, a great book!

There are a couple of really cool things about this book. One, it's about Georges Méliès, film pioneer and director of A Trip to the Moon, which I'm willing to bet you know even if you don't recognize that title or his name. (Picture a rocket sticking out of the eye of the man in the moon...) Two, the book is designed so it's like a silent movie: drawings are interspersed with text, so you get part of the story visually and part from the text (with more emphasis on text than there would be in a film, naturally). It's like a different approach to the graphic novel, and in that respect it's very, very cool. The story did less for me; it's intended for 9 to 12-year-olds, and I found it a bit simplistic (which is too bad, because there are other children's books that I find complex even now). Still, I think if I had read it when I was younger, I'd have been enchanted (I certainly remember Selznick's The Houdini Box with tons of fondness), and even now, even just as an objet d'art, it's lovely.

I am now officially and forever in love with Jeffrey Eugenides and will send a formal request for him to father my queer love children immediately. Seriously? An intense, thoughtful, stupidly beautiful collection that encompasses the epitome of everything that your first, best, worst and last love meant to you. Some of my favorite writers nuzzled me closer while I was pleasantly surprised with some of the lesser known authors. I am now adding this to the my favorites in hardbound shelf. Thank you!

Unbelievable! Intense!
I really need to look at all the books that I should update. Opps! So, this was a decent Anne Rice book - as with all of her books - you can tell that she has done her research... she is a talented writer - and I will always love her works - all of them, I may not be able to finish them right away - but guess what? I never leave one of her books unread (at least those that have the name Anne Rice on them). Story line is excellent and this does suck you in a bit.

No, this isn't the story of that duck that wanted to be a swan. This is a play written by Mr. Winnie the Pooh himself called The Ugly Duckling. It is about a princess who was cursed at birth to look ordinary (or ugly) to everyone by her true love. Shannanigans and laughter ensue as she becomes engaged to a Prince who has never seen her before (but ironically is her true love unbenownst to her worried parents). I played the princess' dim-witted but beautiful servant, Dulcibella, presented by Live Theatre Workshop here in Tucson in the summer of 1996. This is a really great little play for children and young adult audiences in particular, but adults will get a kick out of it too.

Breathtakingly beautiful, and a sentimental favorite.
I know I haven't been married forever or anything, but I really liked the insights in this book! The author is so upbeat, positive, and very realistic. Very helpful for relationships, and not just with your significant other necessarily.

I didn't think I would like a book about the circus. I was wrong. It was a good, quick read.

No se deje intimidar por el tamaño de este libro. Solo tiene que pasar las primeras 100 páginas y luego no podrá dejarlo. Histórico y algo deportivo.
