Dr. Chapman outlines the five languages and asserts that we all have a primary love language. He makes the argument that we can enhance our relationships, both romantic and non-romantic, by learning to speak others primary love language. The book does a great job of spelling out the love languages, giving examples and even giving some practicals to learn how to discover other's love language.
4.75 stars. This book was extremely well-crafted, full of interesting characters, strong metaphors, and vivid writing. I especially like Margaret's and Irma's no nonsense approach to life and death. It made me ponder about how "broken" can sometimes be a good thing. The importance of loving those around you, rather than wishing for what was or what might have been,is a strong theme throughout the story. A++, Highly recommended, I really enjoyed it.

This is the handbook for the beginning year-long training program for Ancient Order of Druids in America. I have read many books on Druidism and Celtic spirituality, so some of it was familiar but there was also some new things to learn from it. John Michael Greer is part of Revival Druidry- an older tradition that is based more on philosophy and personal inspiration and less on history as contrasted with later Neo-Pagan Druid traditions. After introducing the Druid movement and its history, Greer explains 3 triads- groups of related concepts. The training consists of the Earth Path- connecting with nature and adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle; the Sun Path- celebration of the solstices, equinoxes and four Celtic fire festivals, and the Moon Path- meditation. The ceremonies in the Sun Path were shorter and simpler than I prefer. But I found both the information in the Earth and Moon Path sections to be quite useful. He described forms of meditation I'd not heard of before- like discursive, where you focus on a particular theme and see where that leads your thoughts. This book would be of interest not only to those following Druidism (and Revival in particular) but any form of nature-based spirituality.
I am not ashamed in the least to say that I fall into the Twilight series "junkie" category. Yes, it is true that I am a sucker for any sort of romantic novel, and yes, vampires (albeit they are a hugely overused supernatural feature of modern writing) are cool, but those aren't the sole reasons why Stephanie Meyer's books are so alluring. Meyer has fantastic control over her writing. Her character development is phenomenal and thorough; I felt like each individual, from the protagonist Edward to smaller roles such as Jessica, had their own distinct personalities. The stories are told from the point of view of seventeen-year-old Bella Swan, an average girl who experiences some extremely NOT average events. I think Meyer did an awesome job "being" Bella, conveying the confusion and fear and excitement that the audience (which is primarily seventeen-year-old girls) can really relate to. Meyer's imagery is also something that I adored, so much so that a few book quotes made it to my Facebook status. Her metaphors are beautiful and poetic; in fact, the whole pace of the prose is eloquent. My favorite quote from New Moon is a metaphor that Edward uses to describe his loss of Bella. "Before you, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars-- points of light and reason. And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything."

I finished reading Dames, Dolls, And Gun Molls last night. It’s a slim overview of the art of Robert A. Maguire, an artist primarily known for his paperback cover work in the 50s and early 60s featuring sexy women who were frequently dangerous or endangered or even both. Although Silke’s an entertaining writer, the main attraction of the book is the numerous reproductions of Maguire’s work. Dames… contains many images of: as published paperback covers (frequently 4 to the oversize pages); the paintings used for the covers (without the publishers’ cropping and text, many full page); color and black and white “roughs”; plus some of the photos of models Maguire based his paintings on. The publisher (Dark Horse) apparently knows why this reader bought this book: of the approximately 100 pages in the book, only 20 contain appreciable amounts of text. And few (if any) of those contain only text. In one short section I particularly enjoyed, Silke compares a model’s photo with the finished art. He describes the more or less subtle changes Maguire made to the model’s figure for the painting. Although the changes are fairly obvious once Silke pointed them out, I wouldn’t have picked some of them out myself. The changes in color, yes; the changes in body proportions, probably not. I enjoy Maguire’s work and I am sure his paintings helped to sell books. His heyday was a little before my paperback buying years and I don’t remember seeing any of the covers included in Dames, …. However I do remember seeing many mystery books, for example those by Carter Brown, with similar covers. Perhaps one or more of them was a Maguire painting. Maguire is not quite my favorite artist in this genre; Robert McGinnis gets the nod there. But still Maguire’s art is very much to my liking. I only have two complaints with this book. First some of the cover reproductions are on the small side. Even though the book is oversized (12 x 9), when the covers are shown 4 per page they’re a little smaller than the paperbacks they graced. Fortunately, many of the images (especially those of the original paintings) are full page. Second, I would have liked a lot more images!
Loved it... can't wait for the next installment.

The writing in this is tight! This book is great for savoring words and sentences, mulling over what you long for, hosting themed parties, and contemplating becoming a superficial person who sips martinis. I read this book in high school, and I reread it when I was studying for my physics qualifier in grad school.
Absolutely LOVED this story. First pages were strange and I wondered what the characters were talking about but soon all became clear. Couldn't put it down. Better than all of the Twilight books, which I've read.

This man was amazing and his journey from extremely poor little boy in the south to a famous literary figure is fascinating and heartbreaking. It is shameful that someone had to endure all this in a country that is supposedly free. But it's also inspiring that a man born 100 years ago had to go through this, but now we have a black president. I highly recommend it.
