I first read this when I was about seventeen. I was going through a period of reading lots of books about the war and FSTWFF was lent to me by my English teacher. It certainly changed my perspective about war books and from then on anything that had cardboard characters and transparent storylines I found disappointing. This Bates novel was deep, poignant, haunting and exciting. I read it again a few years ago and though the style is a little dated now it's still a superb story. I'm a great fan of H.E. Bates' books but FSTWFF isn't my favourite - try The Purple Plain, or The Four Beauties.
