This book was kind of a hot mess. I understand why my professor assigned it, but it was pretty horrible. Not poorly-written or particularly ignorant, but horrible in the sense of the movie 'Kids' -- eloquently done with distasteful subject matter. When I realized (and wrote a paper exploring) that the book can be read as an existentialist text, I appreciated it more. But I liked it no better.

This autobiography of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali born Dutch ex-parlimentarian best known as the addressee of the letter stabbed into filmmakeer Theo van Gogh's chest at the time of his Amsterdam murder, is an extraordinarly informative account of the life of a woman with every right to critize the culture from which she came. Born in Somilia in 1969, Hirsi Ali (nee Hirsi Magen- she changed her name upon her enterance to the Netherlands) lived a life of domestic abuse, physical mutilitation, cultural, mental, and physical subjugation in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Ethopia, and Kenya, before escaping an arranged marriage and fleeing to Holland in the early 90s. This book, while presenting itself as an explination for Hirsi Ali's abandonment of her religion, streches much further than that- examining such diverse topics as the life of women in Islamic countries (ranging from the pagan-influenced Islam of her Somali grandmother to the staunch rigidness of life in Mecca) to the causes of Somali civil conflict to the outsider's view of European culture to the Dutch political issues surrounding immigration in the last decade. Told in a very readable, first person narrative, I highly recommend this book to any student of politics, culture, religion, current events, or anyone intersted in gaining an insider's prespecitve on a very closed society. -Richard Vaughn, 25 Feb 2007
Read this long, long ago; but loved it. Very engaging.
Bill Bryson almost always writes an entertaining nonfiction book. This one is no exception. He has done his homework, and insofar as is possible given the paucity of information on Shakespeare, Bryson has provided an updated and interesting review of what we know for sure about Shakespeare --which is almost nothing. As a former English teacher, I didn't expect to learn much I didn't already know, but it turns out there have been some new findings in the last few decades. I would liked to have had this book when I was teaching Shakespeare to world-wise teenagers many years ago.

I found this book by chance at the library. The art amazing, subtly expressive - I'm not even sure how to describe it, I just know it's great. The writing is superb, tinged with human emotion and comedic moments...at first it seems to be a story that you've read before...but Modan works the issues of Isreal works underneath the surface. Exposing our casualty with death and war. A great read.
I'm a sucker for Nancy Drew. It's dated, but so much fun. Lilac Inn had some especially amusing characters.

It didn't live up to my expectations.I admire Aurora Liiceanu but her writing style does not go well with the one of Alice Nastase. The book is made up of pieces that sometimes make you heart beat faster, making you smile at the thought that you've been there, done that. However, many of them are just dull articles from women's magazine, published just for the sake of it.
This book is really eye opening and at times disturbing. I had NO idea. Americans are jerks. The Indians who died of smallpox had it easy. Seriously Americans, what were we thinking. Sort of slow and textbook-like at first but after a point your jaw drops and you're hooked.
The Passive Solar Energy Book was the first book to cover all the aspects of harnessing the sun's energy through the construction and form of the building. The book is all about how to keep a building comfortable in any climate using little or no extra heating or cooling systems. If you can find a copy of this book for cheap, you don't need to get a newer book on the subject, it goes through the speciffics of measuring the potential solar energy available to a site on any given day of the year including objects that block the sun off site, such as trees and other buildings. If everyyone read this book, the world would look different.
