Just started and may be a little slow going until I get prom weekend behind me........ I started this book during a period of time when I had a lot of activity going on and my mind was racing trying to keep up with my hands. I felt the book had a very calming effect. It was pleasant to read and sort-of quieting. I enjoyed reading about this handful characters living in Holt, Colorado: the brothers Ike and Bobby, their father Tom Guthrie, The McPheron brothers, Victoria, and Maggie, who seems to link them all together. They are all struggling with issues: a parent with emotional issues who has deserted them, teen pregnancy, loneliness, trouble at work, divorce and the burden of caring for an ill parent. When we look at our own problems, they can seem gigantic and insurmountable, but when we realize that we are not so different from everyone else who is struggling with their own issues, we can find ways of dealing with our own problems. I got the sense that I was likely to meet anyone of these characters in the faces I meet everyday on the street. They are ordinary people facing difficulties and living day by day. There may not be immediate solutions to their problems or things may not work out as planned, but the overriding sense of victory over their hardships can be felt as they come together in friendship and community. I'm glad this was included on our busy-bee bookshelf and I look forward to reading Eventide.
