A really moving story that led to a great psychological movement. Dr. Frankl was in several concentration camps over the course of three(ish?) years and survived, and much of the book is about his personal thoughts on that time in his life. His theory is for psychologists is based around the tenet that people will be able to withstand any amount of suffering if they feel as though their life has meaning, and he uses this to help those with mental health issues. I think if I would have read this at a "lower" point in my life, it would have been a book that saved me. However, I feel as though I'm in a great place in my life, so it didn't change me as much as other people, probably.
Gived incredible insight into the loves of inner-city kids growing up in the Bronx. It's nonfiction but reads like a novel. It was the most powerful book I've read in a long time.

Very handy. Nothing in depth; just date, location major players.
I first found Erastes on a book give away ,I did not win, however I bought this book anyway. Her home page got me interested in her so I thought I would give her a try and I'm very glade I did. Frost fair was a very very good love story ,the setting and time period was so well writing I found my self often closing my eyes and imagining myself at the fair.As for the characters they were totally believable and well developed, even though the story was a little shorter than most books I read she did a good job bringing the people to life. The romance its self was great a little slow, slightly awkward and very satisfying with out being to much as to lose the romance. This story also has a bit of history I was not aware of. I am now a fan, and I will recommend this to my friends.

How can someone don't love this book? It's GREAT!
As a collection, I had to keep reminding myself that she wrote this in the 1890's, when feminism was pretty revolutionary. Without that time frame it comes off as preachy and predictable. It reads less like a series of short stories and more like an instruction manual: this is how a strong woman should act, this is how a decent guy should act, this is how women should react to adversity. One cool part is a lot of the stories use houses as a main character. The sense of the home has a lot to do with the creation of the plot and story which I haven't seen often (maybe Beloved). The individual stories of The Yellow Wallpaper and Turned are the highlights, their darkness makes them a lot more compelling.
So here's the thing. I made the big mistake of reading this book about 15 years ago, when I was pregnant with my second child and in the midst of morning, noon and night sickness. I thought this was a great, scary book, but then something in it triggered my gag reflex and I had to put it down. Everytime I have attempted to get back to reading it, I'm brought back to the days of vomit and have to put it back down. Maybe Stephen King is just that good. I'm going to try it again this summer.
My warning is that this can be a disturbing read- so you have to go into it knowing that it is about a very dysfunctional, odd group. If you liked the movie Royal Tannumbaum you'll like this one.

I sure hope they make THIS one into a movie, and stay true to all the gorey details.
She's Got It Bad, Sarah Mayberry (B-) - This was my first Mayberry book and one that I've wanted to read given the positive reviews of it. I had some mixed feelings and despite my sense of Mayberry as a potentially strong writer, the gender politics here are troubling. The heroine, Zoe, becomes self-destructive as a teen when the hero, Liam (age 17) leaves her rather than risk tarnishing her with his bad boy reputation and dangerous "nature". She subsequently makes some bad decisions as a result of their breakup which leads to a downward spiral of promiscuity and partying. All in all I could understand the trauma of young love lost but questioned the reality of someone's life nearly destroyed as a result of a teenage breakup. Anyway, having accepted that somewhat implausible plot, I quickly found myself questioning the hero's motives as the story jumps ahead 12 years and Liam discovers Zoe living nearby working as a tattoo artist and singing as a thrash club performer. This all sounded interesting until I realized that Zoe apparently needs to be saved from her life of sin. Liam on the other hand is a custom bike shop owner but that is apparently much more respectable. Liam is rich and Zoe isn't, which seemed to translate into moral superiority for him. Zoe is brave and plucky though and uses her sexuality to maintain some sort of equity in their relationship, but that too struck a nerve and made me wish that female sexual liberation not be equated with power over a man. I have to say too that I was a little troubled by Liam's actions after he interferes in Zoe's life and gives her a job. While proclaiming repeatedly that he's her friend and just needs to help her, he continues to have sex with her (over and over), all while maintaining that he can't offer her a future and doesn't "have what she needs." I wanted to like this book more; it is sweet and touching at times. I'm willing to read another book by Mayberry but in the end felt this one has some troubling implications for women and ones that took me too much out of my enjoyment zone.
