This was quite an interesting book with a great ending. The boom had me on edge the whole time i was reading it. This series is definitely not the average sci fi books.
A really worth to keep book.

excellent view of a great ballplayer with troubled life. good read that describes a truely great ballplayer but also a good read if you really want to understand how people will tell you anything to be around you if you are good and the devstating effect of alcohol abuse on family.
I love this book--keep your 1984, your Brave New World, and your Harrison Bergeron... I say Lois Lowery Rules!

Nuggets of profundity and beauty at the onset made me think I was going to get a good spacey read (as in, "have you ever thought of..." in a spacey voice that gets you to think of the universe afresh), but the story gets caught in too-personal recollection that loses its universal appeal. It especially gets caught in remembrance of mild go-nowhere crushes. Anyway, I think my review is falling prey to the same phenomenon... trailing off....

Loved it! Sweet love story mixed in the the unfairness of war. Well worth the read.

I picked up this book because I was initially intrigued by the title since I have a love for elephants. I was also impressed that Jose Saramago won a Nobel Prize in Literature. After reading this I am wondering why he won. He avoids using any proper grammar, insisting of run-on sentences that last pages and are only separated with commas. The story itself is quite boring and primarily about the mahout and the politics of the nobility. There wasn't enough description to make it an interesting time period piece, nor any motifs that I can remember. I wanted to finish the novel just to find out if the elephant actually made it to its destination. The structure was unique and after a while, even had a sort of quaint rhythm, but was devoid of anything appealing that would make me recommend this novel to anyone.

I would have enjoyed the book more without the author inserting himself into the main story.

My hands-down, all-time favorite book.
I liked this more than the stranger. maybe that means I should read the stranger again? but what I liked most was the way that camus can do these amazingly effective descriptions with just a couple of sentences that, even in translation, convey an impressively specific, and moving, atmosphere. fyi: the one I read was translated by Robin Buss in 2001, don't think it's on goodreads. and apparently I'm too lazy to add it.
