Good look at Iran-Western relations mainly with Saddam Hussein. Dated, the book was published in 1991 and it was out while Iraq was still in Kuwait but Allied forces had not started bombing or moving Saddam out of Kuwait.

This book was very interesting and enlightening in regards to the current "bleeding edge" public school. Berkley attempted just about every social experiment you can think of in "bettering" the public school system. I was amazed, as an outsider to public schools, at the issues the young people there faced and the attitude of the teachers. The author portrayed a teaching staff that had a real desire to help and put many hard (under paid) hours and effort into this. However, it seemed they all had an attitude that nothing they did would make a long term difference. It was very clear that the author and the teachers believed that a successful student was one who was both educated and ready to be an activist in society. It's not about making any current system better but seemed they all were looking for young people who would turn every system on it's head. Then they complained and worked hard to try to find ways to get the students in the classroom, engaged and complying with the school system. I found it quite ironic. A great nugget was when the author pointed out that the view of the Locus of Control was a worldview driver in the students lives. It seemed the under privileged and minority see the locus as "external". Meaning that nothing they can do will change anything. They seem them selves as victims. Others would see the locus as "internal". They saw themselves as being able to achieve anything and everything they do mattered. Then they pointed out one christian girl who had a balanced view. God as external has tremendous soverign effect on how life treats us but we have the internal choices regarding how we will respond. The control is both internal and external. They recognized this as a healthy view! I found it helpful but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

I didn't find this as helpful as the CTS book Faith for Children: Learning About God in the Family.

Pound for pound, the best book in the the canon of twentieth century eastern european historical psychofiction. While "psychofiction" doesn't even come close to doing the book justice, it is in my opinion the best sounding portmanteau since spork. Seriously though, this is one of the best books I have ever read. Koestler deals with many of the issues of a traditional dystopian novel, (individuality, morality, ends vs. means) but in a strikingly realistic

I wanted to like this one as much as the last but I just didn't have the same connection to the characters. I was quite interested in Moning's exploration of the dark Druids and Daegus was a great dark-guy-wants-to-be-good-guy, yet I felt like a lot of the important stuff was omitted. I guess it was the 'romance' factor having too strong an emphasis. While I did feel for Daegus and Chloe's love I felt like there was a lot more potential for angst. Sylvan and Nelly were probably my favourite thing about this book. Adam was very absent but that didn't bother me as much knowing that the next book is his. The time travel seemed a bit pointless, as if Moning just threw it in there to satisfy her readers. And seriously what is with all the virgins? I might not be very well versed in romance fiction but Moning seems to think that a man and woman cannot form a lasting bond unless the woman is as pure as snow. I don't like it, it makes the romance feel less unlikely to me. It was entertaining but nothing to write home about.
Sabriel is a well constructed book that is full of excitement, danger and a bit of romance. My rating is lower than it would otherwise be because the dark is really dark. So much of the book is filled with darkness, and the undead that it feels too icky. A lot more sunshine would have helped me a lot.

Amazing non-fiction book about the invasion of Hong Kong by the Japanese in WW2. My father was a POW so it helped me understand what he went through.
