The ending of this book was the best part. I really mean it. The main female didn't have much of a personality to me and would have liked to see a much better back bone to her. The times she did have one were at the worst parts.

I picked up this book because I was initially intrigued by the title since I have a love for elephants. I was also impressed that Jose Saramago won a Nobel Prize in Literature. After reading this I am wondering why he won. He avoids using any proper grammar, insisting of run-on sentences that last pages and are only separated with commas. The story itself is quite boring and primarily about the mahout and the politics of the nobility. There wasn't enough description to make it an interesting time period piece, nor any motifs that I can remember. I wanted to finish the novel just to find out if the elephant actually made it to its destination. The structure was unique and after a while, even had a sort of quaint rhythm, but was devoid of anything appealing that would make me recommend this novel to anyone.

Too heady. Perhaps those are the inevitable growing pains of a talented, hyped, but young writer, but Smith has yet to fill her own shoes. Or something.
WOW!!!! I loved this book! What a beautiful tale about love, adventure, trials, and more love. I don't know what to say at the moment other than I just barely finished it and if I wasn't dead tired, I'd open it back up and go through it looking for my favorite parts to read all over again.

I was much happier with the storyline in this book. Without spoiling anything, I feel like this book covers what I wanted to happen in book one, and also makes me wonder if the first one is really even necessary.
Fabulous re-telling of author's obsession with a young Romanian street hustler. What makes this book so interesting is the way Bruce Benderson flawlessly weaves Romania's history into an alluring narrative of his own experiences in the country.

Beautiful and heartbreaking and hopeful and everything I could have wanted.

I really enjoyed this trilogy. Marillier knows how to make a story interesting and you can't put the book down. I went to bed at 2:30am. :)
I love the Bernie Rhodenbarr series. He's intelligent, funny, and a gentleman to boot. Incredibly fun to read about. Block's characterization and snappy dialogue (better yet, the book jokes and tidbits) make this series great light reading.
