So I am back on the historical romance reading kick again. And this book is a good reason why I keep reading this genre. It has a broody hero, spunky heroine and some great story telling. The first part of this book is intense. It follows the couple through India's First War for Independence in 1857. In some respects it is a story that could fit in a contemporary romance. The two must deal with survivors guilt, war and separation as well as ostracism from main stream society (her by being rescued from the sea, him by being part Caucasian and Indian). The characters are well developed and you quickly become involved in their story. The pace is fast and well structured in the first part of the book. The transition to England from India is not as smooth. At one point it is a year after the war, the next it is now 4 years after the war. To me it was a little jarring to have our heroine just coming back to England (about a year to a year and half later) to seeing in the next passage our hero in another relationship and 4 years have past. Once the time line had straightened out, the pace became smooth again and the recovery and reunion of the leads was very touching. This is a story that is mostly told in the heads of the Hero and Heroine, but there is also some great romantic dialog (some may say cheesy, but it just made me sigh and think of Daniel Day Lewis). A good story wrapped in a historical romance package. And since it is a romance, it has a happy ending after putting it's leads through the wringer. Yay! ;-)

Phenomenal. Brilliantly told with language that's simultaneously gut-wrenching and terse.

Again, another very light read. It doesn't take you away, it's predictible, but there are gems in the book that makes it worth reading.

Hilarious murder investigation as Humpty Dumpty is pushed (or was he?). Literary allusions at the drop of a hat, and all round jolly good fun which is to be expected from the author who brought us the Thursday Next series.

A little slow in some parts. Not nearly as good as the Hunger Games but still a good example of YA SciFi/Fantasy.

The text is a little dry and sometimes drags -- I skipped through the 50-page chapter providing bios of all the Eerie Pu artists. But if you're a fan of the gory covers, this book is chock full of them, and for that alone it's worth the price.
Fun and cute.
Formula writing at its best, and she keeps cranking them out. Read a classic or good mystery instead.

Very good author, and a well-written book. However, please do not read this book if you are sad or depressed. I literally had to put it away because it actually made me cry (haha laugh my friends).
