So I am back on the historical romance reading kick again. And this book is a good reason why I keep reading this genre. It has a broody hero, spunky heroine and some great story telling. The first part of this book is intense. It follows the couple through India's First War for Independence in 1857. In some respects it is a story that could fit in a contemporary romance. The two must deal with survivors guilt, war and separation as well as ostracism from main stream society (her by being rescued from the sea, him by being part Caucasian and Indian). The characters are well developed and you quickly become involved in their story. The pace is fast and well structured in the first part of the book. The transition to England from India is not as smooth. At one point it is a year after the war, the next it is now 4 years after the war. To me it was a little jarring to have our heroine just coming back to England (about a year to a year and half later) to seeing in the next passage our hero in another relationship and 4 years have past. Once the time line had straightened out, the pace became smooth again and the recovery and reunion of the leads was very touching. This is a story that is mostly told in the heads of the Hero and Heroine, but there is also some great romantic dialog (some may say cheesy, but it just made me sigh and think of Daniel Day Lewis). A good story wrapped in a historical romance package. And since it is a romance, it has a happy ending after putting it's leads through the wringer. Yay! ;-)
